I read your post a few times and wondered, but didn't ask, if you have multiple LRCAT files. But then, I wondered if you just had one LRCAT file, and simply two drives connected. You shouldn't need to be concerned about version numbers of the LRCAT files, assuming your prior upgrades merged the old data into the new / current file.

When you get the transfer process complete, you should achieve both (a) all your image files are merged onto one external drive and (b) all your images are managed by one LRCAT file. You can rename the LRCAT files to whatever you desire, so before you go further, go back to your files and clearly name the files so you know which is which (rename the files in an OS window).

Then, pick which LRCAT you want to be the ongoing 'master'. Open this master in LR on the new computer and use the 'import' process to merge the LRCAT data from the other catalog. Use the command File / Import from another catalog. Point that import to the second / non-master source. The processing will scan that 2nd LRCAT and give you some import options after the analysis is complete.

On resolving the missing icons, look too at the location of the old image on the old computer / config. You might find things easier to explain with some screen prints of examples, being sure to store the file so we can open and 'see' the details of your screen capture, if needed.

Changed catalog names and currently following instructions regarding import another catalog. Will let you know how that goes. I'll also do a little more research on the missing files and share screen shots when I get to that point. Thank you for all your help! It's much appreciated.

Your issues would seem to be related to not always using LR to manage your image files. From what you've described, it seems like you've done the following (high-level):

Old Configuration

Old_Folder_A\IMG0001.CR2
Old_Folder_B\IMG0055.JPG

New Configuration

New_Folder_1\IMG0001.CR2
New_Folder_2\IMG0055.JPG

For LR in the examples above, the location of IMG0001.CR2 will be 'missing' in the new LR catalog because the file is no longer in the proper location (Old_Folder_A). This can easily be fixed by updating the folder location in the new LR catalog. If the subfolders are mostly the same on the new drive, you just have to update the high-level 'parent' and let the updated location cascade through the underlying subfolders and images.

If the link to the file was missing on the old computer, that's an issue that won't magically improve on the new computer. If you desire a valid LR entry and LR edit information in your new LR catalog, you have to find the underlying image file. If you typically delete from the catalog with the LR option to delete from disk, the only way to have missing links inside the LR catalog is that you moved / removed the file outside of LR's control. LR will tell you where it thinks the file should be located, just click the exclamation point icon. Do you recognize the folder name? Did you scan the old harddrive with the OS search tool and see if you could find any of these actual file names? Do you have other versions of that file where IMG0001.CR2 is 'missing' in folder-A, but that same IMG0001.CR2 exists in folder-B such this folder-A is not an issue after all?

For those images missing on the new computer, but not the old, just update the catalog to the new location or move the image to the expected location on the new computer.

Thanks for the reply!

I choose a file that shows missing link from my "Family" folder on the new computer. IMG_9866.CR2 on 10/12/15 at 12:53:35. I went to the old computer and first looked in LR in the "Family" folder for this image. It is not there. Then I went to OS and did a search. Photoshop opens with a photo from my niece's wedding with the same image number but completely different year. I next went to the Finder and under external drive where the files are kept, "Photos-Family" there is no such image. ???

I'm also seeing family portraits that I took in 2018 that show in my old LR program/computer under the Family folder but are not in the new LR program/computer. They did copy to the 8TB external drive and are there but did not show as being "imported" in the new LR computer program.

Is it possible that I choose the wrong .lrcat file? I have multiple ones...LR4, LR5, etc....Would that make a difference. Also, would it be possible to just "reinstall" from my last backup? Sorry for all the probably "dumb questions" but as you can tell, I'm not very technologically advanced. :(

When I click on the ! icon for the missing folder, it takes me to the 8TB drive where the other folders in the file are linked to but because this file doesn't exist on the 8TB drive, there is no where to "select" a file to link to.

I knew this wasn't going to be a fun process! Ugh

So, I'm reaching out for some assistance with an issue, as I'm stumped and hoping for some answers.

First background info: I have been using my original Apple iMac (2011 version, OS X Yosemite) with LR for far too long. So, needing to transfer LR to my new Apple iMac (2019 macOS Catalina).

I have photos on two external hard drives that I wanted to just consolidate onto one larger hard drive so I copied all the of files to the 8TB external from both. I also saved a couple of LR backups onto this drive along with copying my Lightroom catalog files with previews, presets, etc...

I installed the Lightroom Classic to my new computer. Attached the 8TB external to the computer; clicked on the LR catalog files and everything seemed to open up just fine in my new program. Of course I had the question marks on all the folders because I didn't have the two old external drives attached. I "found the missing location" for all of the folders by linking them to the external 8TB and the "question marks" of course disappeared.

BUT..... within some of the folders, I still have files with missing links. When I look at that file number, say 0023.CR2, and go to my old computer, that file isn't there. I also have edited files that show as missing link in the new LR but not there in the old LR. This is not the case for all of my folders but for some. There seems to be no rhyme or reason.

When I take photos off my computer, I "delete from disk" through Lightroom and normally don't move photo files around at all.

I also did not change folder file names or anything like then when copying to the new external drive.

Anyone know what's happening or what I've possibly done?

I'm assuming because I'm coming from such an old operating system and older version of LR, that maybe things just didn't transfer well?

At this point, I'm thinking I'm safe to "delete" those missing linked files because when comparing the old version photos to the new version photos all of my pictures seem to be on the new computer.

Looking forward to the great knowledge of information from UHH members.....

Thanks,

Lori

I haven’t shot the dome, but I’ve done a lot of shooting in high school auditoriums for my sons wrestling. Obviously the 70-200 will be your most reliable. But, there are occasions where I’ve successfully used my Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 when I had no option but to be stuck high up in the stands while my son was wrestling on the farthest mats. Bumping up the ISO to 5000-6400, (though I do have a canon 6D), still allowed me to get usable shots, even cropped shots. So I think you’ll be able to get use out of your long lens. Plus, at greater ranges, you can use lower shutter speeds and still capture good action shots. If you shoot a lot of indoor sports, I highly recommend the 6D, as it’s great in low light situations.

Thanks for the reply and info! I've had to shoot with at least 6400 ISO for a few night games. :( Maybe one day I'll have a 6D. :)

I wouldn't think there would be much room to use a tripod in the stands but my friend suggested I take along my monopod which is probably a good idea.

I've been inside, but not for an actual game. It was very dimly lit inside. If you google "high school football at the fargodome" and look at the image results, you can see examples under these lights. See if you can find the EXIF data from some of the images. I would expect your f/2.8 will be the only useful lens in the Fargo light.

Thanks for the suggestion about looking at EXIF data. I hadn't thought of that. I was so hoping for the response of "The lighting is wonderful!" Can't be any worse than a night game, I guess. :)

Can anyone from around the Fargo, ND, area tell me how the lighting is for shooting high school football at the fargodome? I'm using a Canon 7d Mark II with a 70-200mm f2.8 and/or Sigma 150-600mm f5.6. Any tips/info greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the information regarding the ink cartridge size, Chris. I haven't had the chance to check into that yet. I was just sticker shocked at the cost of filling the printer with ink. I've had a small Epson Photo Stylus R340 which costs less then $100.00 to replace them all. :) I'm purely a hobbyist and only sell a few small prints. If I need larger ones, I order through White House. I liked the fact that you can replace the waste ink cartridge though in the P800 and can't on the P600. This is one of my issue with the R340; that, and it's becoming outdated. I REALLY liked this little printer. :(

I'm having to replace my printer and I'm considering the Epson P600. For those of you that have this printer, how have you liked it?

Thank you for suggesting Bay Photo. I did contact them, but the wire hanger is only available with a frame. I'm hoping to not have to frame the metal prints.

Does anyone know of a lab that prints on metal, but gives the option to hang with wire?

I currently have LR4 (will be getting LR5)and love it! 95% of my processing is done in this program. I also have PSE10 and use that for layers, special effects, etc. I see Creative Cloud is now offering LR5 and PS for $9.99 a month, that's a suggestion also.
