Nice!

I just saw your Galen Rowell quote. I had enjoyed one of his books, and then got to see him do a presentation at the Smithsonian - around 1990 :)

That sounds really cool. I'd have loved to hear his perspective on things. Supposedly his friend that climbed said he was a climber that liked to take pictures, and his photographer friends said he was a photographer that also climbed.

Pretty neat.

Thanks all. Yeah, I have to remind myself how lucky I was to even see this owl when I get "greedy" and wish it was lighter out, or that I somehow had my tripod, etc. Wishing the high ISO wasn't necessary, but I honestly grabbed the camera quick and didn't see him long!

From this weekend at the cabin. Lighting was poor so image quality suffered without my tripod.

The last one was a male; and I wasn't welcome! The fish was half gone, and looked like an expensive breakfast in these parts if it was a Koi, not sure!

Thanks much to each of you for the positive feedback. These Osprey sure were a treat.

Well I've been trying to get started on BIF here in Michigan. I was lucky enough to get in front of some local Osprey. I'm using a D7100 and a Nikkor 300mm f/4 with a 1.4TC.

Lots to learn, but a whole new appreciation for things!

Have a super day, and thanks for looking.

I own the tamron 150-600 and quite pleased with the results. Its heavy (over four lbs) but I bought a nice carbon monopod (vanguard) and a vanguard head and its helps with the heavy load for long shoots. Many times I just carry it by the tripod collar. For just over a $1000 its a steal! It hard to get your hands one so put your name on a wait list.

Any top images you could share here?

I have a 100-300mm plus a 1.4x extender, when I put it on a crop sensor camera I get 630mm.

Which lens and how are the results? What body? Thanks.

From Photography Life review:

If you are after the best performance / reach and you are on a low budget, the Nikon 300mm f/4D + TC-14E II is still a better deal in my opinion. You will surely miss VR in low-light situations, but this combo is simply amazing, especially at its much lower price.

I'll have to hit the local shop and hopefully get a closer look at my options.

Debating the 80-400 vs the 200mm 2.8 with TC. For wildlife, is the 80-400 generally going to produce equally sharp images if I do my part and with adequate lighting? I'm thinking only of the 1.4 TC right now. 300 fixed is also on my mind, but the potential for some versatility is slowing me down on deciding. I like the sharpness of a prime, but would prefer the potential for 400 which puts prime out of my budget. Seems lots of favorable reviews on the 80-400. Again, will be coupled with a D7100 at this point.

I understand the Nikon 80-400mm is on sale for 2200.00, close, and maybe worth a look. A great lens! The Nikon 70-300 for around 600.00 is a good lens for the money, I have one and love it. Weight is always a big factor, when you talk about a big lens (heavy) and a good tri-pod, you are starting to get into a lot of work. Well worth it for the right situations, but needs to be considered. Just my two cents!

Really leaning in this direction. $2,200 new anywhere? Rebates?? Thinking this would be the way to go if I could grab it at that price.

Could I expect to get good images at 200-300mm with this lens? Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX Nikkor Lens

Does the large variable range really hurt this lens as compared to the Sigma 100-300? Are they not really even in the same class considering the speed as well (i.e., is the f/4 a huge advantage at 200-300mm)?

Appreciate your thoughts - just entertaining all kinds of options under $2K.
