I have used a Canon 100-400L for over six years with 20D, 40D, 7D and 1D4 cameras. For my style of photography, walking around photographing wildlife, this lens is ideal.

It has a good zoom range, focus down to six feet and effective IS system. Pictures are sharp at f/5.6 and even better at f/7.1 or f/8 with better contrast. By adding a 21mm extension tube it makes a good close up lens for butterflies, etc.

Minor dislikes are some difficulty in locking on to flying subjects due to excessive focus hunting. This can partly be alleviated by setting the focus limiter or manually pre-focusing. On an APS-C camera the lack of AF when using a teleconverter. This again can be got round by using AF whilst in Live View mode, but does take more time.
