MWAC I have not been around much either, I found a lot of bickering on the site was tedious . I also found it disapointing that there was no change made to include a site for critiques and one for non- critques ...it just makes the site a pain to weed through .
I will say that I found your photos to be of high quality and I valued your opinion, I love your portraits in particular. please PM me if you would like to stay in touch and we could critique each others photos truthfully. cheers

I like all your photos. I like two and three the best. the first one just seems a little contrived to me... like you dressed her up and had her pose. I do like the edits with more color better, but I like the vintage feel that you are going for and understand it.
keep it up good work!

So let me ask you, did you sharpen just the grass without sharpening the subject? if so how do you do that?

I sharpened the the entire photo but I use a plug-in called Focus Magic (http://www.focusmagic.com/). I think I paid about 30 bucks for it several years ago but now it looks like it has gone up to $45. I use it on virtually all my photos although rarely it introduces some noise in my skies that I go back and Gaussian Blur the crap out of until the noise goes away.
I'm not a big software guy, I'm still running Elements v.2.0 for Pete's sake; but I love Focus Magic. I have Elements v.9 around here somewhere that I need to learn how to use, I just haven't yet.

Good to know, I am a bargain hunter myself and use freebie stuff. Right now I am into Zoner 13 ...I suppose I will someday bite the bullet and buy something fancy.
I appreciate your taking the time to converse with me. Take a look at some of my other photos and tell me what you think. I am going to stalk your photos too ;-) Cheers

Happy to be of assistance. I had a bridge photo once that I thought was all about repeating patterns and somebody commented, "Great vanishing point shot."

I never saw that until someone else mentioned it.

Sure go ahead... crop away. I cropped the first one a bit close for most folks liking , but like I said I have quirky cropping taste

I didn't crop quite as much as I thought, the photo became unbalanced with that second white rock gone. I did a touch of Levels and Sharpening too.

Can you go back and have her step forward with one leg to mimic the pattern of the fence in the background :-).

What do you think of my tweaks?

Eric

Great now I'm on the second page, let me add the original back in the post for comparison.

Trueblue,

The uncropped photo is a great starting point. I would take a little off of the top, but leave the whole umbrella and just a bit of sky above it. On the bottom I would take off the bottom strip of grass and leave as much road as possible. The fence and left border are good but I would crop the right side at the point that just crops off the far left hand white rock.

With your permission I'll crop it and repost it so you can see what I'm saying.

I went back and forth with the crop , the origanal has the entire umbrella but I kind of liked the composition better with it cropped in tight like this. I am at work right now..shhhh. I will post the original uncropped when I get home and see what you guys think. I could be wrong on this one. I do tend to crop very close ... I have a quirky sense of composition  thank you for the input !

I like it better without the crop . The big expansive lawn gives you an idea of just how wealthy these folks were. yikes where is this?
PS so how do you do this ... jusr layer them on top of each other?

Nice shot, would like to see the full umbrella and see what a little fill in flash on the woman face and legs would add to the photo.

hmm I never saw her face... maybe you are right. I liked the mood of not seeing her face, and to tell you the truth I can count on my hands the amount of time I have used a flash... I guess I am just not a flashy person... yuk yuk sorry
anyway. I did not know this woman and she was having a quiet moment and I did not want to intrude. I love the mystery of umbrellas though and how they hide peoples faces. I try to photograph them a lot. I think I should lighten it up a bit though, seems to be the general opinion.

Me too. One other compositional point: Generally, composition is stronger when subject is walking into the frame--not out of the frame. I understand the inclusion of the fence on the left (behind the woman).... Did you crop?

ah..yes maybe your right...but I went for the mood... if she was walking toward us she would have a face, and then she could no longer be just anyone. ourselves included. Thank you for the idea though.
