Try using the back focus feature on your camera and experiment with it. You may be surprised to learn you use the focus button half pressed for just the exposure. With this method, you can leave the camera in the continuous focus mode and just using the thumb to switch back and forth. I get a lot less out of focus pictures using this method and so do most professionals of which I am definitely not. Great for action. Read up more about this. You may never go back. Since you are relatively new at this you have not formed the habit of using your index finger for focusing and taking the picture.

The sensor isn't bigger, but the pixels in the sensor are. However, the later processor on the 7100 make up for it and give much better results at higher ISO's. This just means you have a little more latitude with light.

I have owned a D7100 for a year and am perfectly happy with it. The buffer is the only disappointment while taking rapid pictures at 6 per second in RAW because of the 24 Mg sensor.
I would wait a few months and see if the D7200 comes out and get the latest...or, then the D7100, if you still want to buy it, will be very inexpensive.

Polarizing filters are great in direct sunlight, especially when you have your shoulders pointed at the sun...in other words at 90 degrees to the sun. However, with modern post processing software, one can achieve similar results. Now, in order to reduce reflections, especially in water, it's really good. It also reduces reflections on colors in landscape photography and its very subtle, but there. You would have to do some 'pixel peeping to notice it. If you do get one get a good quality one for the largest lens you have and then get step down rings for any other lenses you have rather than buying several filters.

It is easier than once believed, if you search you tube for camera sensor cleaning you will be amazed as to what you can learn. I was always hesitan until i finally tried it, will never pay to have it PROFESSIONALLY done again.. I belong to several photography clubs and we once had a professional camera service tech come in and demonstrate how to clean our sensors. I can't say it enough, TRY it yourself. I use the eclipse cleaning products, you can google them or even buy there product on amazon, They had video instruction on there web site at one time..You will get lots of comments on this forum about this topic for sure....Good luck

I ordered the Digital survival kit 17mm/1.6 from Photographic Solutions via Amazon. I had seen this performed on u-tube and was very careful about doing it. I locked the mirror up, put about three drops on a just opened sensor swab, crossed my fingers...not really, and swiped from one end to the other at a slight angle and then the other way. I then took another picture at f22 and everything was spotless! Thank you folks for giving me the courage to do this. I am not going to do this every time I see a spot. However, I know that if I ever have to do this again I will have confidence in doing it correctly. Many many thanks to all of you!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Will keep using camera until it becomes noticeable. Then get the 14mm to 16 mm 1.6 crop sensor sticks with a reputable cleaner (Eclipse?) and cross my fingers and carefully clean.

Works great now with Windows 8.1 and updated Nikon Capture NX2. With huge 14 bit NEF files from my D7100, over 30 MG., it slows my poor 5 year old computer. But it works great now. Hoping for a NX3!

As suggested, I put it in Aperture Priority and F22 and 100 ISO and took a picture of a white sheet of paper. Zooming it in, I found 3 or 4 spots. In normal pictures, I can not see any spots. I very rarely use F22. I tried the Giotto blower twice and did not budge the spots. Do I send it to Nikon for about 3 weeks and $125+ or ignore it as I can't notice it in normal photographs? Even if I did I could easily get rid of them in Capture NX2. Nervous about trying the wet sensor method of cleaning, as I have never done it before. I'm very careful when changing lenses. Is this normal?

I purchased Nikon Capture and Photoshop Elements at the same time. Used both for same photographs just for kicks. Came to prefer the Capture NX (now NX2). Much more user friendly as far as I am concerned. I can do stuff with U-Point much much faster than with anything with PSE. Actually as you learn more and more with it is a very powerful editing program. I shoot almost all in RAW and then do post processing. Large file sizes from D7100 (up to 32 Mg) can slow my Vista era computer down even though I have Windows 8 on it now.

I went from a D90 to a D7100. Love the extra resolution and better autofocus and better noise at higher ISO's. Still a little perplexed at the difference in behavior while taking flash pictures in Auto ISO. Camera chooses ISO 400 as a default even though I would prefer ISO 100 as there is enough light. However have to admit that unless I am blowing it up a lot on the screen, the pictures are still amazing with ISO 400. Am getting guilty of pixel peeping for no practical reasoning. Also have to admit to getting great pictures with D90. Should have kept it as a second body.

Absolutely love the software and use it almost exclusively for editing. Much less of a learning curve than PSE7 which I also have. The U-point technology is amazing with what it can do. However, I upgraded to Windows 8 from Vista and now I cannot use Capture NX2 as it is not yet compatible, so temporarily I am using PSE7 and View NX2. Hopefully Nikon fixes this soon!

I finally got Capture NX2 to work with Windows 8. I am a very happy camper! Hoping to see Capture NX3 or whatever they may call it soon. Heard Google bought out Nik software, but not Capture NX2. Get with it Nikon...give us a better Capture NX2.

I shoot in RAW almost all the time, unless I am shooting sports and I need the FPS from my old D90 and not have the buffer fill up with the large RAW files. I always post process with Nikon Capture NX2 as it is so much faster than Photoshop Elements or Lightroom and it handles Nikon NEF files well. For example, you don't need to worry too much about the white balance and concentrate on getting the picture. You can fine tune white balance later in processing.

If you have Windows 7 and can use Capture NX2, wait till Nikon or Windows are compatible. However, January 31 is the last day that you can upgrade for $39.99. After that it's over $100+. Catch 22! Nikon assured me that they would have it working within 6 months or less. And so it goes...

Thank you. That tells me not to upgrade to Windows 8. Why they do this and make your current software useless is beyond me.
