Been there two or three times. Have not done the river cruise thing but that seems the best way to see a whole bunch. Couple years ago there was about 5000 up there. Just by driving in and around (way before Harrison actually) we say up to 25 perched here and there.

I am very impressed. Hand held, hazy and all.

I appreciate you doing this demo/test in response to my earlier post.

These images were shot hand held at 24 mm for the wide shots and 2400 mm (200 x = 50 x optical and 4 x digital). ISO 800 on an overcast somewhat hazy morning.

The #2 shot you can almost see the water tower just slightly to the right of center at the skyline approximately 3 miles.

#3 Zoomed in 200 x

The # 4 Zoomed in 200 x Germantown water tower at approximately 3.5 miles.

#4

A lot of interesting points/discussion. Thanks to all that have contributed.

I will probably see if I can get my hands on an SX50 (loaner) to see if it does what I want.

The lake is about 4 km across (3 miles). Can I see people camping over there?

Benefit of the SX50 is that is a camera with many good things as well.

I want a spotting scope (versus a telescope) I believe.

I want an SX50

I should be able to use the SX50 as a spotting scope - right?

opinions?

Anyone into doing some light painting photography? This was my first Light Painting Attempt and was easier then ever to do. It was over one minute open exposure set on bulb and using only one tool. "Sparklers" This is now a 24X36 hanging in Maggies Tavern in Saylorsburg Pa, owned by Jim Edinger.

You did really well. I've done a few. They are 'fun'.

Tried this a few nights ago.

Easiest control was with an LED flashlight working thru a long tube - core from Christmas wrapping paper. Shorter ones allowed too much dispersion and less control.

Also tried a few with just the flashlight which had a red or pink end.

And of course this was all ad hoc or by the seat of the pants - not much thought to the background etc.

What do you think?

With shadows great. Would like to see of just the shadows as already noted by another.

Thought that was only jesting me - don't know how I could separate figure from shadow - unless I cropped it out!!

More separation between object and background should allow different camera angle? Would obviously change lighting needs.

Someone posted a query on how much time do we spend taking pictures.

Let's try this one - what do we admit to - with some guilty or with pride?

How much time on UHH? Reading, learning, laughing - whatever.

Myself - I was two hours a day a few months ago. Other things in the way for a bit now, I may be down to 20 minutes, usually scanning for things I want to learn about.

We just came back from Churchill on a Polar Bear tour. Went out one night for northern lights, just outside the town. Temperature was minus 17 C, with maybe a 15 km wind. COLD when standing still. Warm boots for the toes!
I did not take a tripod so got skunked. Those that had tripods did well. Settings as others have indicated. Part of a tour you will do fine.

Am also looking forward to 'results'

Envious as well.

Did you move from 'kit' lens to the SIGMA? And would you say there was a world of difference?
