Lucky to get these but the blackbirds made their nest very close to the house and I was able to check on them everyday and photograph them when something different was happening. Not the best photography but they record the event.

Appreciated Archy.

Hi Adorius
For the first image, trim off the top just below the red bulb on the top left and clone out the leaf pointing downwards on the top right. Also clone out the white patch on the top right and the bit of red bulb in the top middle. Then trim off a bit of the left. Lovely shot of the bloom.
2nd image - The image is too contrasty with the whites being blown out. You could play with levels or curves to bring the whites back but I would re-shoot this image. Select a more overcast day or diffuse the light hitting the flowers with a white sheet. Move round to the right or left to avoid the leaves being in the middle of the image, or break off the leaves and shoot from this position.
3rd image - You can save this one by cropping in close, cutting out most of the light areas and leaves and out-of-focus buds on the right.
Have a go and re-post. Good luck.

Thank you Chinaman for your observations and suggestions. I don't know how to do some of the things you mentioned, such as cloning so I think I shall wait until the camellias bloom again and take some photos and keep in mind what you have said so that hopefully I won't have to make those changes.

Hi Adorius
In these days of digital photography, photoediting is becoming an integral part and should be taken on and not avoided. Search this forum for suggestions for a free and simple photoeditor as I know several have been recommended before. Like everything else, there is a learning curve and eventually, you be familiar with using it. Good luck.

Your advice is very much appreciated Chinaman but I do have photo editing programmes on my computer. Unfortunately I am limited to how much I can use them. I have some learning difficulties that reared their uggley head about 20 years ago and have only got worse over time. I simply can't understand how to do things. I can use everything in the programme that came with my camera including making slide show type videos with music but when it comes to Adobe Photoshop I can use it more, along with MSPaint, in creating photo art rather than improving on photos. I can tell you that I feel very frustrated by my situation.

Not too much to improve on, unless by a small chance you are worried about the washed out sky in the third one. That could be fixed in various post-processing software programs.

Thank you Drigby 1. I didn't think much about the sky but I think the photo was taken at sunset so perhaps the photo is also a little dark.

Are the photos of the chicks recent? I ask because my next-door-neighbour has a birdbox facing almost away from my view and what I think are thrushes are arriving with nest-building materials now and obviously making a nest in there. I'm always fascinated by the intricate way a nest is made so that it stays together no matter what, and your photos show how well made that nest is. Good progress shots - bet you've got a few more too.
Mike

Sorry Mike, the photos are not recent. I haven't found where the blackbirds have nested for the last two seasons but the adults are around the garden. I hope your neighbour will let you take photos of the thrush activities in the bird box. The blackbirds used the same nest twice so they only had to patch it up the second time. Here's some more photos.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Dunedin. Visited the "Castle," the penguins, and the albatross colony. Had a great sandwich at a shop called Tulls. Don't know if it is there anymore or not. But 20 years later I can still taste it.

Glad you liked Dunedin. Larnach's castle was not called a castle by it's original owner. He called it 'The Camp'. As it is the only building in the Southern Hemisphere that is anything like a castle it became known as Larnach's Castle. I like the view and surroundings better than castle. Beautiful gardens in particular. We used to have picnics there in the days when it was free.

When I return I hope to reside somewhere on the east coast north of Canterbury. I come from Dunedin.

Much appreciated. As mentioned already my husband made the garden and keeps it nicely. I just love to take photos of it.

Beautiful shots. NZ is a gardener's paradise. Brings back fond memories of my year there. Are you on the North Island?

Thank you jmdenver. I'm in Sydney at the moment but I come from the South Island.

I taught on the N.I. for a year in Wanganui, but spent a lot of time traveling around the S.I. Have some wonderful friends in Christchurch. I hope you weren't affected by the earthquakes.

Thanks RicknJude. I haven't got started yet. These are from last summer. The dark pink Bougainvilleas are flowering but not the others. I'm still waiting for the red bottle brush and later, the white one.

The bottle brush are my favorite. As I recall, They tend to bloom closer to Christmas time. Absolutely gorgeous when in bloom.

I don't remember them being that late. Perhaps you are thinking of Pahutakawa which flowers around Xmas and is also called the New Zealand Xmas tree.
