Manual mode means no exposure functions work in any automatic way. You set the three values and that is it.
The only dial in compensation you can employ in manual mode is flash compensation. But if you aren't using flash, it's a moot point.
Exactly so. What you can do in Manual Mode is to dial in a compensation (say -1EV). Let's say that your initial exposure was f8/100th/400, your exposure reading once you've dialled in -1EV would indicate that you are overexposed so you can then set shutter speed until you get a 'correct' reading on your exposure meter. In this example, assuming nothing else had changed, you'd end up with f8/200th/400. (Based on Nikon D5100 behaviours!). Can be useful where you want control + compensation.
