Hi, on the D5100 the only feature that helps reduce vibration from mirror (other than Live View) is Exposure Delay Mode (see menu D4 under Custom Settings, select and view help using ? Button to see what it does).

Perhaps I could ask my question in another way: in terms of focus which plays the main part - the camera body or the lens? What role does the camera body play in focusing and what part does the lens play? Thanks, Bob

In my experience of using Nikon and non-Nikon glass on the same Nikon body, the Nikons focus more quickly and more quietly - which would lead me to reply to your question with "Lens" ... I guess this is especially true where the AF is driven by the lens motor rather than from the camera body which is the case with my D5100!

Don't often use HDR - interested in your comments on this one ...

In your previous post regarding this question, I wrote that in manual mode there is no exposure compensation.

Manual mode means no exposure functions work in any automatic way. You set the three values and that is it.

The only dial in compensation you can employ in manual mode is flash compensation. But if you aren't using flash, it's a moot point.

Exactly so. What you can do in Manual Mode is to dial in a compensation (say -1EV). Let's say that your initial exposure was f8/100th/400, your exposure reading once you've dialled in -1EV would indicate that you are overexposed so you can then set shutter speed until you get a 'correct' reading on your exposure meter. In this example, assuming nothing else had changed, you'd end up with f8/200th/400. (Based on Nikon D5100 behaviours!). Can be useful where you want control + compensation.

Very good shots. What is that structure in #3?
#1 is my fav, thanks.

Thanks whiteeagle and thanks to John n for answering the question regards the trig point! We have these all over the Uk, many on peaks of hills/mountains - they make great foreground features as well as their primary purpose for cartography.

Very interesting. How you get the effect in the second one?

Thanks. It was taken with a fairly long exposure (1/6th second), with a low ISO and small aperture and I zoomed the lens (I'm pretty sure it was the Tamron 70-300 - can't see the Exif from iPad!) as I took the picture.

Cheers, Mike

I think that the second image has a LOT of promise...if if was cropped tighter, and that bar was gone...the light in that shot is really interesting with the dirt and stuff flying around.

I'll have a go at your suggestion and repost if I manage it!

I like all three, but the first two are almost like pieces of art. What did you do to create that look? Good job!

For the first one, I selected and over-sharpened just the horse - left the remainder as taken (f3.2, 160th, 1000 ISO 50mm Nikkor). I also blurred out the jump as it was in focus.

The second one is cropped but otherwise is about as it came out of the camera - I think a lot of the 'atmosphere' is due to the fact they were shot into the strong sunlight and she was kicking up a lot of sawdust in the school. I'd love to be able to say it was more scientific than that but it wasn't!

Like the 3rd one. Got any more?

Thanks Jeanbug35. Will have a check to see if any are worth posting. She has a new horse which we'll see on Saturday, weather permitting, so will try and get some of her.
