When you import your images into LR4 select "Copy as DNG." This will convert the images from your camera's RAW format into Adobe's DNG format.

While in LR4, If you need to edit an image in PS, just right click on the image, select "Edit in" from the window that pops up, then select Photoshop.

I bought a third party Camera Connection Kit from the Cellphoneshop.net for $6. The SD reader worked great on my iPad 3.
