Although I think there are more chances to see whales in other places (Alaska in the summer, Hawaii in January, Baja in winter, etc.), there are quite a few whales that summer in the Gulf of Maine - humpbacks, minke, right whales, and others. They are usually here until early October, when they, like half the population of the state, head to Florida and other points south! If you have the time from Bar Harbor a whale-watch cruise might still let you see some whales, but would also let you see some fabulous coastline, seals, etc. Have a fun trip - if you are heading out soon I have to say the weather has been absolutely spectacular and the trees are beginning to turn down along the coats (have reached their peak inland).

Headed out today. Think it will be a three day drive more or less (more if hubby drives, less if I drive) or if we get side tracked. Can't wait to hit the road.

And - are you driving or flying? If you are driving (or flying into Portland), you will come through Portland, and up the coast, and so there will be lots to see. Freeport (home to LL Bean!), the Pemaquid Peninsula and its' famous lighthouse, the Portland Head Light in South Portland, etc. If you are flying into Bangor, concentrate on Bar Harbor, Mt Desert Island, and points downeast. As posted - unless they have barricades up, you can go into the park other than the main road and there will not be official gates to keep you out. An in Bar Harbor you can still get the schooner cruises, whale watch tours, sea kayaking, and other fun activities!

We are driving so will definitely take your route suggestions. Would love to photograph whales up close. Wish that would happen. Thanks for taking the time to give ideas.

Also check out state parks, they won't be effected, towns around the park should be good too, there is a good car museum in Seal Cove if it's open, boat trips should still be running, got me thinking now, BTW just got an ad from Weathervane restaurant if your into seafood check them out,
Bob.

Thanks. Those all sound like good ideas and my husband is really looking forward to the seafood so we will checkout Weathervane.

I love Acadia but if I don't go there I would try Rt1 from Freeport to Bar Harbor, Bar Harbor itself, Boothbay, off Rt1, Rockland, Belfast, both on Rt1 as you go to Bar Harbor, Bar Island at Bar harbor, climb the hill, at the other end Perkins Cove in Ogunquit,
Bob.

We should have time for that. Thanks for the suggestion.

The only snag would be if they put up some road barriers, but I really doubt that would happen. If you bring bicycles it's a great place to ride, especially the old carriage roads (not so much going up Cadillac Mountain).

Barriers may be there since they are putting them up at the war memorial. Looks like a little pettiness is going on. I don't know that bikes will be feasible on this trip but we may can hike part of it.

If you look carefully at a local map you will see a couple of ways to drive into the "park" without going through the entrance gate. The locals do it all the time. In fact, to pay the fee was almost on the honor system. The area was developed into a park long after the road system was in place.

Most Excellent!!!! Thank you! That sounds like a plan. I have a annual park pass so I am not stealing the fee either. :)

Head to "downeast" Maine - an hour East of Ellsworth (instead of going 18 miles South to Bar Harbor). You will find traditional fishing villages like Jonesport and the West Quoddy Head State Park with its lighthouse and across the bridge to Campobello Island - there you will find lots of beautiful beaches and the West Quoddy Head Light Station. (Bring your passports). If you have time, head across New Brunswick to Nova Scotia, and especially the Margaree Valley and Cape Bretton. Spectacular spots. And you have to remember that Mt Desert Island is somewhat more than Acadia National Park - Bar Harbor is fun and beautiful, and there are lots of little towns and villages around. Down the coast to the south 30 minutes from Ellsworth is Searsport, home to some great antique stores (and when you see the Big Chicken Barn on the way down - stop there for some really good antiques as well).

Beautiful pictures. Maybe passports will arrive before time for us to leave. Thanks.

Interesting. seems you can get in with the above but from the same site, to exit you need the following:

Do I need a passport if I am leaving Nova Scotia and flying into the United States?

Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. and Canadian citizens will be required to present one of the following documents for entry into the United States by land, air or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Bermuda:
•Valid passport
•U.S. Passport cart
•Enhanced Driver’s Licence
•NEXUS card (Canada/US)

When my daughter and I went to Glacier National Park we decided to venture into Canada. I got a warning then for not having a passport. I am afraid to try it again and passports have been applied for but we are waiting for them.

You can travel around the island where Acadia National Park is located, Mt. Desert (pronounced dessert). Many water vistas and other delightful photo ops, including little towns. Or drive to Stonington. Again, more beautiful coastline + working docks with lobstermen around :)

If have time, drive north to Baxter State Park and look for moose!

Cadillac is the only "mountain" in Maine you can drive to the top of.

Thanks. I would love to see moose. :)

Well after 10 years of planning, my husband and I finally were able to coordinate schedules for Maine in the Fall. If the National Park remains closed, any recommendations to compare to Acadia and Cadillac Mountain?

I am completely drawn both into the scene and to the personality captured. His eyes sparkle with life and you were able to freeze a moment of joy. It is hard to believe he wasn't feeling well. I hope he is okay also. These are amazing works of art.

Its a lot of luck : ishoot eagles also, there all over the place here , not a day goes by that i dont see them if i go out any where , my lens zooms to 300mm
Which is equal to 450 mm on my dx . But it sure would be nice to have a 500mm which would get me to 750mm equal on my d90. That would fill the

I would love a longer lens. Maybe in July. Looking at a 400 mm, don't think the budget will swing a 500 mm yet. I was debating about a monopod. Tripods just are a pain when I want to move fast but a Monopod might work. Thanks for the hints.

I like the B&W. Your shot of how the bridge seems to disappear into the clouds is really a good perspective. Makes the picture so much more dramatic!

Thank you. I am trying to learn by playing with perspective. It is so much easier than other things like exposure!
