Hi Guys, This is a shot of a Lifeboat station I took in Wales last year, I’m just learning how to convert to black & white using cs6, can you please advice as to what you might do to improve it, I used 2 filters in cs6 # 1 desaturate..#2 smart lab sharpen, and also did a bit of clone stamp work to tidy it up a bit.
I have uploaded both copies, thanks in advance, Taff.

Nice conversion, Taff. You've done a good job. Maybe bump up the contrast a little.

I think it has to many grays for my taste. Nothing outstanding or dramatic. I think and just my opinion about what I personally like is black and white should be dramatic. Nice composition and subject.

Wales is stunning. I've been once and am to return this fall. Your photo (in my opinion) just needed subject isolation against a darker background complemented by contrasting clouds. Hope this works.

Hi Spyball, nice, but a bit dark for me, thanks for input tho and looking.

Really good B/W -
Pop over to topazlabs.com and d/l their free 30 day trial of B/W plugin (also runs itself) just to see how many variations there are on the B/W theme.
Enjoy

Wow, thanks for the up on Topaz adjust, I have just downloaded the trial (version 5) after watching a 45 min tutorial on you tube, fantastic bit of kit, thanks again for the link, time to go play i think

I think you did a pretty fair job...although I like the color one too.

One thing; go to Ian Barber's site (he's a member here)

He and his partner have a site dedicated to B&W and they are FANTASTIC at it...it's worth learning about from them.

Thanks for the tip and looking, I cant seem to find Ian Barber's site on here, just Googled him but his site is down for maintanance.

Doesn't look like you need a lot of help. Just FYI though - there are a number of ways you can do it. My favorite way is to click Image>Adjustments>Black and White, which opens a dialogue box that allows you to control how the reds, yellows, greens, and so forth are converted to black and white. Fast, easy, and a lot of control.

Thanks JM, I did look at that but found the best result for me was via the lab sharpen

, #3 We just pulled up to the Mara river when the baby got ambushed by these 5 boys.
#4/5 Just a nice bird, don't know what it's called, I just like it. Hope you enjoy them.

Great capture - maybe just a little less crop on #1 and #2 or a vertical shot? Good subject - keep it up

HI, There is no crop on #1 or#2, these were taken from a viewing hole at Treetops hotel, we were that close. Thanks for looking.
