That is a perfect shot. Dynamic colors, tack sharp and beautifully composed. That is one that should be framed and put on your wall. Your i phone 13 in my opinion did as good a job as any larger camera if not better.

Thank you! I am interested to see how big I can print it.

Shot with IPhone 13 Pro at sunset. Edited on the phone in Lightroom.
This is the view from the Accedemia Bridge. Facing the Basilica di Santa Maria Della Salute. A lot of photographers on the bridge with big kits and tripods. I snapped a couple of shots and thought to myself, I’m glad I am not carrying all that gear😂

I think your i camera/phone did great as did the photographer. You went to Venice with out your DSLR I just sold my Sony A7 IV and lenses etc. I strictly use my Samsung S23 ultra for everything I shoot and have not been sorry. Check out photoshop and Topaz if you want to add size. They both do an excellent job. As for exposure adjustment if you shoot in raw with the samsung you can adjust everything the same as with a camera. You got great results can not wait to see more from your trip.

Thanks for the nice comment.
Samsung has that “Pro” mode which is pretty slick. On the iPhone you have to use another app which is not always convenient. I use the Lightroom Camera when I want more exposure control. The other thing the Samsung has is better zoom capability. The IPhone 13 Pro’s zoom is only 77mm equivalent. It’s a great length for portraits but there were times when I wished I had more reach. For the most part I didn’t really miss the DSLR and I have to say I did not miss carrying the extra weight. Not quite ready to ditch my DSLRs yet but I can see some point in the future I just might.

Thanks for the response. I understand the issue of print size. I haven't played around with my IPhone 13 Pro enough to assess the limitations of exposure control but I think exposure compensation gives me what I need.

And I still wonder, this picture, with the same composition, taken at the same time and with similar lens coverage, could it have been done much better with a DSLR or Mirrorless?

I would say no. If I had my DSLR in my hands would the shot have come out any better? No. What makes a good photograph is the composition. I am not saying this is a good photo. But Composition is everything
I think the other factors are really convienence. Being able to control the camera more easily is weighted against lugging heavier gear vs the camera in your pocket. Do those things affect the image? Probably not. So for me the only question is the sensor size and being able to print. I think that only really affects what your end goal or choice of medium is. If you are just viewing on a screen no.
But this is a really good question and I would love to hear others opinions too.

Can someone explain how and why this photo could be better if taken with a good DSLR or mirrorless camera? (Serious question)

Well for starters I would say a larger sensor would make a big difference. The IPhone 13 Pro only delivers 12 megapixels on a very small sensor. So it would be able to capture finer details. You would be able to create larger prints (although with software you can upsize). Making large prints is important to me for some of these shots so it will be interesting how well they will do. Lastly, you would be able to control exposure more easily. With an iPhone you have to get a little creative and use exposure compensation to change the exposure where as with a DSLR or Mirrorless you have full control over iso shutter speed and aperture.

Just returned from Venice. Before going I committed to leaving my DSLR kit behind and shooting only with my IPhone 13 Pro. I was very nervous because I had never been to Venice, don’t know when I might return if ever and didn’t want to be disappointed about missing shots. On the other hand I was looking forward to not being weighed down by my dslr and lenses. This is the Gondolas of San Marco. Editing was done in Lightroom on my phone. I have not had a chance to open the images up on the larger screen of my desktop yet to clean them up with final edits. I am not unhappy with the results.

Here is an example of an image from the Indiana State High School Tournament. I thought I would need a 70-300 so that is what a brought, giving me a maximum aperture of f/4. Next time I'll use my 50-140 f/2.8, which will buy me one more stop of light. I shot at 1/1000 of a second, giving me an ISO of 128000 using Auto-ISO. As you can see, the result was a lot of noise. Other than using the f/2.8, does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks,

Ben

That is an excellent shot. Can you get courtside? If you can this shot would become great from the lower angle. Lens selection, I shoot a lot of Ice Hockey which is very challenging. Rinks are dark and the white ice and boards really drive the metering crazy. My go to lenses are my 50 1.8 and 85 1.8. If you can get courtside those should be enough focal length and give you enough speed.
You mention that you try to reduce noise the best you can in camera. The reality is if you are shooting any indoor sports you are going to have to let go of that and accept post processing as a necessary evil. The other thing I personally had to let go of when shooting sports is pixel peeping. The reality is you are shooting action not a portrait. No one is zooming in to see if the iris of the eye is tack sharp. The viewer is looking at the action. The average viewer won’t even see the noise we see.

First, you appear a bit foolish, but a simple solution based on knowing where you are. On the Hog there is a sub forum that deals with photographs of women with few or no clothing, the nude forum. In addition, there is a sub forum for portraiture. So move this discussion (re-post) to either of these forums.

Next, there is an old rule in England that states, you can't get a job until you have a job and you will only get a job if you have already had a job. Silly, but it is about understanding the 'business' that you want to be in. So, where do you find models, why other women (mostly models).

Where will you find models? A place called Model Mayhem is a good start. You can join for free and you will need to build two things, a portfolio and more importantly, a reputation.

Oh, don't expect to just go on MM and find models, mostly you will fail. Remember, to find models you need a model to help you get to models. It is as simple as that.

On MM you will find what are called traveling models, that will be were you start. Models know models, so you turn to these models to get to be 'known' as a person doing photography. This is where the reputation part become critical. A recommendation from another model that you are 'kool' is what you need. It is also helpful to have known models giving out recommendations.

Now, you may not know this (surprise!) but you are close to the southern avenue traveled by models, especially in the winter. Next, you are in close proximity to Texas, don't laugh, it is central to the photographic world in general. Dallas /Fort Worth is quite close to Tulsa, and the other two are Houston and Austin Texas. Models are going through and using these Texas locations.

So, on Model Mayhem you will find Liz Ashley, hire Liz and get the portfolio started (she is considered one of the Grand Dams of internet modeling). Yes, MM is a pain to use, so you Google Liz Ashly and it will give you the link to her on line MM profile so you can get right to her IF you have a MM profile.

Right now there is another model traveling in the area Charlie Kristen, she has been around a number of years and does the traveling model circuit. She is a good model to get hooked up with, but your vary best would be Liz Ashley, she knows and net works with all the quality models. Just Google Liz Ashley and select 'images. Be in be sure to plug in Liz Ashley, nude and the hit images. Liz can do nudes, fashion and everything in between. She is also great to work with new photographers. Funny thing, she knows more about lighting and studio practices than your average photographer and she is a true female, vary nurturing.

Talk to the models and get started, and have fun.

The OP appears foolish? You are suggesting he hire Liz Ashley playboy model and Charlie Kristine and pay their hourly rate to get started working with Models? Great advice! You nailed it!

hey guys , I live in Tulsa and im having trouble finding models ..we are not known for famous models but we have beautiful women !! .I am lost on how to contact or ask or whatever to bring in the beauty we offer .i do mainly portrait and boudoir . I also do shoots for aspiring models but rarely .I just ended a career as a Captain firefighter/medic so help me please ?

There was once a bank robber named Willie Sutton when he was finally caught they asked him “why did you rob banks?” His reply was simple “because that is where the money is”. If you want to find women to photograph go where the women are. If you are looking for professional or aspiring models Model Mahem for sure. But you can also look in less obvious places. Facebook and Instagram. Lots of women there. Especially Instagram. There are a lot of women who are posting selfies that would love the to have or need professionally done images. Dating apps like tinder can be a source also. I currently have 3 women from tinder that I use regularly as models. You just need to be clear that your intention is photography not dating. I use them to practice or try new techniques. It’s a time for pics trade. They get some images and I get a free model. They are not professional models. Which for what I want is an advantage. Hire a professional model they already know how to pose and look good infront of the camera. However if you are doing portraits and boudoir most of your paying customers will be non models. So working with non models to practice will help you hone your skills posing them and also finding the right angles for the real women who are likely to be your customers. Think outside the box a little. Most of the beautiful women in your area are not professional models. You just need to go where they are and ask them. What to ask and how ask is up to you but basicly you want to tell them what you are looking to do and what they will get out of it. You should have them sign a model release if you intend to use any of the images for your portfolio. Have a portfolio of your own to show them what you can do.
Their big concern will be what are you going to do with the images. I usually tell them nothing unless I decide to use them for my portfolio which will be with your written permission. I have a document that basicly says that. It simply states the shoot is purely time for pics no money to be exchanged. They get the pics with a limited license but I retain all copyrights. I clearly state I wont use post or display their images in any way without their written permission first. We both sign it.
Good Luck.

Suggest you get your "credentials" in order first, if you haven't done it already. What is your business/studio name?
How do people find you? Check with Tulsa City Hall and learn if you need a license as a professional photographer. Get a business license and probably a state sales and use #. Use these to get items for your business without local sales tax. Print some business cards with business name, your name, address, email address, online place where you have posted photos that others might see, phone number (make it look professional).

Next, always appear professional and act like one. Think it through first - what will you say to introduce yourself to a stranger. Ask if he/she has been photographed, if they need more shots for their portfolio, etc.

Think now about where you can go to take a few test shots regardless of the weather or time of day. Or agree to an appointment to meet.

Research, research, research. You can do a lot online. I've been amazed at the photo pros with postings on youtube about lighting, posing, cameras/lenses, etc. Look for poses and lighting that you want to replicate in your shots/portfolio.

Best.

Well I went back to a gym which I hate. Why because the lighting is so bad. I don't have to tell you guys and gals about poor lighting do I?
Anyway a lot of the shots I took with a 50 mm 2.2 iso around 5000-8000. I also used the 85 1.8 but the focus is a tad slow compared to the 50mm and for under the basket to tight.

Jules,
We photographers obsess over things like lighting and noise etc. But in the end what makes sports images great is how close to what you see with your eye does it come. You nailed these. These look exactly how they should, shot in a high school gym. I love that you shot these with a nifty fifty too. As I have mentioned before I shoot a lot of hockey with a fifty. It’s amazing how good that relatively inexpensive lens can be in those situations. Well done as usual. Thanks for sharing.

My son's Motorola cell phone works fine - most of the time. In certain areas, he cannot connect to Google, Facebook - any other sites. The phone function works, but the "Data" part doesn't. If he gets a Wi-Fi signal in a store, he's fine.

It was my understanding that cell phones can connect to outside sites using the cell phone signal. If Wi-Fi isn't available, I can still connect to outside sites on my Motorola and Samsung. Any suggestions?

It’s simple, Data requires much greater bandwidth than voice and text. If you are too far away from a cell tower and signal is low data won’t be available. Data eats up a lot of bandwidth that is why your calls are basicly free now and your plan is based on data usage. You might remember you used to pay by the minute for cell calls. Now most plans are unlimited calls to and from the US and Canada but the cost variance in plans is based on data usage.

I am a very non-technical person and struggle with technology every day. After more than 20 years of photography and not buying a program over the internet I finally decided to go for Topaz after reading so many glowing reports here about what it can do. I've spent most of the morning trying to download files and I think I succeeded but I can't tell. Topaz has no phone tech support so I sent them an e-mail from their support page and received a response that they are swamped with requests and will e-mail me back in a few days. I have never bought programs from the internet because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to download or find them and I have fallen into exactly that trap. It's not a mistake I'll make again. I'll see what their response is, if one comes, but it looks like I've lost my money. Selling software and not offering accessible support is really shady. They will never understand my disappointment and frustration. I'll probably get a ton of snarky answers from hoggers who understand software but that will not be a help.

Not knowing exactly where you are in the process makes it a little bit of a challenge to lend some help. My experience has been when you actually download the topaz programs it puts icons on your desktop. I am going to guess you haven’t actually downloaded the programs yet but rather the downloader program. I know that is confusing but the downloader actually downloads the program from the internet and sets it up for you. If you go to your confirmation email it has a link in it that will take you to your Topaz dashboard which lists all the software you purchased. You can then start all over again. You don’t have to worry about paying for it again in theory you can download the software an infinite amount of times. The program only works when you register it. So my suggestion is just start over again. Good luck.
