I looked at the image using photoshop.
I am new to this too, but was able to just lighten the face. Using a seletion tool then adjusting the light and contrast.
So the answer is yes it can be saved.

Welcome to UHH. How is good ole Essex these days?
I spent a long time in Hertfordshire.
Have relatives that live in Wix, Essex.
t'was 40 years ago I was in Scotland. Loved it there.
Travelled from Edinburgh to St Andrew then across too Inverness down through Drum Drokkect (miss spelled)crossed over to Abrouth before returning to London UK.
