Wonderful pictures of the GBH. My wife and I live just 15 minutes away from 2 of the best wetland sanctuaries in SE Florida (Green Cay and Wakodahatchee). Unfortuately I can only afford to use hand-me-down cameras...... On the plus side, my wife is not nearly as "cheap" as I am and her P1000 (3000mm) just arrived yesterday ... which means I get to keep her old P900 (2000mm) camera!!! Can't wait to get out this weekend!

I was looking for a nice shot of birds in the trees. My wife, who was paying more attention to detail than I was, looked down at our feet and saw this spider web.

I got my wife the P900 when they first came out. Our sole criteria at the time was she wanted something that was easy for a novice to use but that would also good for outdoor wildlife shots. The P900 has ideal for her purposes because we are able to get very good (by our standards) close up shots that out of reach for other cameras, like my D3100 w/70-300 telephoto lens.

[To Lawman re. Pictures of Phu Bai ]

Great pictures. I was at Phu Bai in the spring of '67 with the 3rd Bat/26th Marines (and later, Khe Sanh, then Con Thien). We had a really nice guy who flew one of those bird dog planes, a Army Capt. Charles L. Deibert, call sign was "Catkiller 4-6".

We all liked him so much that we gave him a going away present, the Distinguished Service Cross for helping to save our butts at Hill 48 on Sept. 10.

What your seeing in the Western sky just after sunset are Jupiter and Venus. So, Jupiter is what you've confused with Mars. Not sure what your zoomed in images are...but Venus goes thru phases just like the moon. Currently it is about 1/2 full. For Jupiter, you should be able to capture it and its moons similar to the image below. Keep trying...the P900 should be able to do it.

Wow, guess we really confused ourselves there. I cropped the images above, but I realize that that's like zooming because it expands to fit the frame size (I'm a rookie at this). Since Venus in is half phase I'm thinking that the 2 full phase images may both be Jupiter that my wife took but at different zoom levels??

We will definitely keep trying. Thanks.

My wife took these pictures 2 nights ago with her Nikon P900 point-and-shoot. She just shot in auto mode, and when I looked at them the ISO was 1600 and I was wanting to try the shots at ISO 100 so that they wouldn't be so washed out. Will try again on another clear night but I was really impressed with how well they seem to turn out. The larger looking planet is Venus and the last 2 pictures were shot at maximum zoom. I'm guessing if we crank the ISO down we'll start to see the reddish color in Mars.

And they keep going back for more. Maybe they're onto something. :D.

I'm starting to wonder if there is a conspiracy between the "probing aliens" and my VA hospital. They keep calling me in all the time for the same procedure .... coincidence? I think not.

I knew half of them. My answer for the fruit or vegetable that is never processed, canned, or frozen was "banana". While you can freeze bananas, I have never seen them available frozen.

I think banana should probably count. That being said, I still only got 5 correct.

No don't use longer exposures...the moon is extremely bright. Notice how you have blow-outs already, those bright splotchy areas with no detail. Set you camera on Manual and use a low ISO. Something between ISO-80 to 200. Keep your aperture closed down to f8 or higher. Adjust your shutter speed as needed to eliminate any blown out areas. Using a tripod can help assure sharpness so that's a good idea. Now these setting are just suggestions. Experiment to find your best settings. I'm interested in this camera. With that much optical zoom...this camera should blow all others out of the water on moon shots.

Thanks James. Great suggestions. Now all I need are some more clear skies.

These types of clouds are usually higher in the air, forming over mountains, and would probably fool a lot of people.

excellent, I"m going to have to try out my P900, as well, the next time we have a clear moon....

Have you ever noticed that when we decide we'd like to go out and get a nice shot of the night sky, it goes cloudy for weeks at a time. :)

good shot what lens? and other info

That picture was taken with my wife's camera, the Nikon P900 "point-and-shoot". No setup, just walked outside and snapped a few pictures handheld. It has an impressive 28mm-2000mm super zoom lens. I didn't use any special settings, just left the camera in automatic mode. At maximum zoom it's equivalent to using an 83X magnification.

Next time I will use a tripod and adjust the settings to keep the lens open longer and hopefully get an even better picture. This camera has been excellent so far for outdoor, wildlife pictures.

Finally got a chance to take a moon shot tonight with the P900. Didn't use a tripod, just stood on the sidewalk and took a handheld shot (1st picture). The next 2 pics I just zoomed and cropped from the original. Tomorrow night I'll use a tripod and use a longer exposure.
