D7100 Covering the viewfinder?

There is a reason why nikon has viewfinder shutters built into their pro DSLR's. D700, D800, D3's and D4. It keeps light from hitting the sensor, which will overexpose the picture.
Nikon recommends that you cover the viewfinder when mounting the camera on a tripod.
I read using the screen for in manual focus mode my be beneficial. I can see doing it for macro work.
