.... One large square, sixteen small squares, with eight smaller squares inside them ....
2 sets of 4, right?
Each one, of those 2 sets, makes a 1x1 square.
So that's 2 additional squares + the 16 originals =
18.

There are only 16, not 18 small squares
By "small squares", I'm guessing you're referring to the 1x1 squares, and if you are, then there are 18.
Refer to the 1st image.
I consider the 1/4 x 1/4 squares
(the 2 sets of 4, in the center) as, the small ones
(5th image).

... and you forgot the two large squares formed by the two sets of four interior squares
That, is what makes the count 18.
Again, refer to the 1st image.
I came up with 40.
I was really bored. :)
1x1 = 18
2x2 = 9
3x3 = 4
4x4 = 1
little = 8
18+9+4+1+8 = 40

Wow! Good shot, tg1911! Is he ever colorful!
Thank you,
sailorsmom.
They do have some nice coloring.
A nice contrast to the dreary Winter colors. :)

Great shot of the Painted Bunting. I see them this time of year at Okaheelee Park. The females that I see are all green.

Thank you,
zuzanne.
Green, huh?
Haven't noticed any green birds around here, but now I know what to be on the lookout for.

once you have seen a painted bunting, you never will forget it. they really are spectacular
Yes they are,
twitcher.
I look forward to seeing them, every Winter.
This is the first time I've been able to get some decent shots.
Thank you for the comment Carolina Wings, and the information.
Does anyone know what kind of bird this is?
Going on the vivid coloring, I'm thinking it's a male.
I only see them in the Winter, so I'm guessing it's a migratory species.
I rarely see more than one at a time, and don't recall ever seeing a female.
The white spots, are rain drops.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, everyone.
