I had asked a photographer/instructor the question my adult children had been asking - "Is that a real picture you took?"
His response was that any modification, even something simple as cropping, is now called 'ART'. I've taken some photos of brilliant early morning sunrises in beautiful colors untouched in PP. They look faked to some - so satisfy yourself.

Great shots. I also love sunrise and sunset shots. The attached two are just one of each, taken from a point of land I can get SR on the Chesapeake, and SS over Annapolis and Navel Academy, all within a few hundred feet. Your star lights-software?

I was told by a Professional ($575/hr), that my D5100 has more capability than most of us will ever use. Menus, sub-menus, and sub-sub-menus are available for adjustments, many features of which can be done in post-processing. Perhaps sometime in the future, as technology changes cameras (example mirrorless), I might consider a replacement. Very satisfied with my camera.

I've used the D5100 for a couple months now, but as a previous reply mentioned, don't use HDR in camera, use Photomatix or other processing software for better results. I belong to a local (Annapolis MD) group called Baltimore HDR and get great results with Photomatix.
Regarding the camera. A world renowned professional photographer ($575/hr) looked at my camera during a shoot and said there is nothing more that I need in a camera as a non-professional.
Along with the camera, the Nikon D5100 Magic Lantern Guide s an excellent reference for every camera function.
Good luck

I am not sure if this question has a simple response or requires a more complex evaluation based on camera and digial processing software. Experienced photographers I'm sure hold the answer. Thanks to all in advance.

Being a newbie also, what I have found to be the most helpful in learning aspects of my DSLR is the almost infinite video of instruction on YouTube. Just go to YouTube, enter DSLR Aperature videos (as an example) and review some of the many that are included. If you cana't find what you want here, the point and shoot camera is not a bad option.

Thanks for the information, and I will keep the UV filter on the lens, if nothing else than to protect against accidental scratches and dust. I wonder why UV filters are recommended in DSLR ads?
