Most of my photography is wildlife. Birds in flight is my specialty. When you have white feathers as a bald eagle does and sunlight reflecting off of the feathers, exposure compensation is probably the most important thing to use. Typically, I shoot bald eagles with a Nikon D500 and a Nikon 500mm prime lens (pf). I usually shoot aperture priority 7.1 giving me a shutter speed of 1/1000...enough to freeze an eagle in flight. Depending on how high and bright the sun is and whether or not clouds are blocking some of the sunlight, I set my exposure compensation to -0.7.
I have many sh*t shots...but this is my favorite.
Apparently "runny" sells.
When I'm out photographing nature, I am usually ready for anything. Sometimes I'm caught by surprise...but with my shutter speed set at 1/1000, I often am able to capture the unexpected. In this photo, I was ready to photograph an Osprey getting ready to fly from a piling in the Chesapeake Bay. In stead of flying...well, the photo tells the story (though the title of the photo "Osprey Poops a Duck" also tells the story). For fun, I placed the photo in one of my gallery shows and it was bought by a gastroenterologist.
An image is created in the camera...whether on auto, manual, shutter priority, aperture priority or scene mode. That image can be processed in any number of software programs. The final iteration might sell, might be kept as a memento of an excursion, might be stored online or on a hard drive. In my mind, calling yourself a professional photographer is correct if you are making a living from your work. Most photographers supplement income or do it for the sheer joy of photography. I have seen photos taken with cell phone cameras that outshine DSLRs. A real photographer is someone who takes pictures.
Thank you. They still play at the Birchmere.
Whether shooting people, wildlife, architecture, CD covers...it's about my longtime love of photography.

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!
While nature and wildlife photography is my main interest, I have also shot album covers for record companies, portraits, museum exhibitions and more. I spent a good part of my life in the musc industry. My memoir was published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2020. Titled "Fast Forward, Play, and Rewind"...available at most major booksellers.
