Canon will only give you a repair quote if you send it to them, so you're out the cost of shipping there even if you don't repair. If the original version, they're selling used for about $450. You might balance a repair estimate against replacing, living without a filter or upgrading.

It is the original version, I'd like to replace it with the IS II version, if for no other reason than the addition of the zoom lock (mine creeps a bit). I've also considered the current Sigma version of this lens.

You can remove the filter ring by grabbing it carefully (don't touch the lens surface AT ALL) with pliers and twisting to deform the ring even more. This will loosen it all the way around and should remove easily. You might find a YouTube video of this if you're squeamish about trying it or want to see it in action.

I will give this a shot, didn't think to look on YT, you're right; there are several vids on this exact topic.
Thanks for the replies.

A little while ago my 24-105L lens dropped from my camera bag from about knee height, onto a hardwood floor.
Seeing shards of broken glass made me initially think the issue was worse than it is; the point of contact was the edge of the lens, and the UV filter broke but the rest of the lens seems to operate fine. Problem is that the rim of the filter is bent just enough that I cannot get the ring off now, and it feels naked walking around without a filter on the lens. Is this a send-it-to-Canon thing or is there a trick for this issue? The lens has never been serviced, and is 7 years old or so; if a service is advisable anyway I may just let the service department address the bent ring issue as well. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Matt

There are very few ways you can find unconditional love. A dog is One. He's a beauty. Do you know how to tell if the dog loves you more than your spouse?????

Looking forward to the answer to this one!

We added a new member to the family last year (2020) right around this time. This is Calvin, AKA Cal Naughton Jr.
My Canon 100mm 2.8 macro offers great portraits of this guy (see download versions), and he was a particularly willing subject this day. He only stayed this size for a few weeks; the last shot is just cell phone shot from the holidays to show how much he grew in 8 months. Dogs are the best, right?

I like the horse the live oaks the most.

Thanks, Karin! I'll post a Cumberland set in the main section; the light was tricky the day we saw the most horses but there are a few keepers.

In my limited experience with shooting stars, I find that I'm always trying to keep my shutter speeds as fast as possible in order to avoid star-streaking, and trying to use as low ISO compensation as possible to avoid noise.
I'm using a Canon DSLR & glass (6D2 body), and don't have any experience with Nikon mirrorless, but with my kit, ideally I'm looking to stay around 12-15 sec max shutter times and ISO ~3200, and compensating for any shortfall with boosted exposure. I've had good results with a 50mm 1.4, but would love something wider FOV. I have a 100mm 2.8 macro lens that works beautifully in the right composition, but my shutter times creep up to 20 sec or so and the streaking starts to get noticeable. My 24-105 f/4 is the widest lens in my kit, but I'm having to boost the ISO so much to compensate for the aperture that those shots require a good deal more post-processing. I've got my eye on a Rokinon 35mm f/1.2.

Hi! Nice photos... brings back memeries!

We have been there. We actually stayed at "Country Oaks Campground" in St. Mary's for 4 winters...many years ago. Not sure if you go in that direction often. Loved it there. It is at Exit 1 on Hwy 95. If you are every near there stop in and say hi to Loni (owner) from John and Sharon Harbaruk. We miss him.

Thanks, Sharon! I get down there once every year or two, fantastic place for photography. We'll keep an eye out for Loni next time, I'm sure it's just a matter of asking someone to point him out, everyone knows one another down there.

Love the live oaks and have always wanted to go to Cumberland Island.

Thanks, it's a pretty magical place. Best time to visit is late October thru mid-December; it's a bit chilly in Jan/Feb, then anytime after mid-March and the mosquitoes can carry off pets and/or small children.
Day trips on the ferry are easily made from St. Mary's, but if you're looking to camp you have to plan way ahead as reservations for a given date open up 6 months prior, and most sites sell out every day that time of year.
So planning for 10/29/21, for example, requires logging onto the reservations site as soon as it opens on 4/29/21.
