You can do math with them, but it is complicated. For one thing, there are no zeroes. The letters are I,V,X,L,C,M: values, i, 5, 10, 50, 100, 1000. Higher values would have a bar over them. How an anyone woder about what's right and wrong about property rights? Think of all the folk so involved in their cellphones they are no longer a real part of the social scheme of things.
