I started my Pentax journey in high school (the only brand my uncle used). I added lenses to the corall (all manual lense), added an ME body and inherited my uncles collection of lenses(all manual) and bodies. Several years ago wanting to go digital, I found a 35mm Canon at a pawn shop with some lenses. Knowing those lenses would change over to digital and jumped from Pentax to Canon. I have worked and worked to try and get comfortable with Canon's system and images and have started to consider going back to the Pentax and old lenses. I can as you can, upgrade to autofocus lenses as budget allows.

Having been on the other side of that comment and being a bit shy and wanting to learn more from someone who may have more experience, thus expensive looking camera gear. The compliment may be a way of trying to break the ice and screw up enough courage to start a conversation to learn more about photography. I am a member of different forums on different subjects and they all purport to be the 'friendlist' activity around and everyone will gladly share their knowledge and experience when in my experience the truth is quite the obvious. My sister in law organized a family shoot a little while ago and when things were winding down, people moving on, I asked the photography what she was using and I was told just the barest facts available and nothing more in a tone that implied it was none of my business. My equipment is nothing to be jealous of but when complimented, I will thank the person and try to engage them in a little more conversation to find the true purpose for their inquiry, such as, "Thank you, what to shoot with?"

If you already know where you are staying, some of the lens rental companies will ship to the hotel/motel and you can pick the lens up at the office and then drop the lens back in the mail when you are finished, saving you a full 3 week rental. There are post offices in several different locations inside the park. Having been to Yellostone a few times, it would be well worth the time to drive to Bozeman to rent the lens and again to return it. Especially if this is your once in a lifetime trip to Yellowstone. Also, very worthwhile to get up early, get to your destination for the golden hour light and siesta in the midday and get out again in the evening, hard to do with non-photographers in the group maybe.

Bozeman Camera rents lenses. Bozeman is about 90 miles from West Yellowstone and about 80 miles from the North Entrance.

Wildlife in YNP may be 5ft from your car or a mile. I take 3 lens, 18-200, 70-300 and a 150-600.

Not ALL wildlife in Yellowstone is arms reach from the car. MANY will be where you will have to reach out at snap the photo. My best grizzly images the bear was just a moving dark spot across the meadow before magnifying with a camera lense. On a budget, the most versatility that you can take with you will give you the best results.

I am thinking if the waterfall was moved more to one side or the other (rule of thirds). I would go towards the right with what appears to be evergreens along the creek OR if you followed the orientation of the primary subject (waterfall) and oriented the image portrait orientation vs the existing landscape orientation the image would focus the viewer more on the waterfall. Remember these are all opinions and you know what opinions are like...
