That is fine if you use your right eye. I am left eye dominate but right handed.

Me too. I tried to use back button focus, I like the concept. But after poking myself in the eye with my thumb a few times, I gave up on it.

Hey bsprague, thanks for the link. I saw that it was in the DealZone for today only and ordered one right away! Been looking for something like this and just saved about half the cost.

Pretty sharp for a kit lens. But no VR, so when used at the higher magnifications or at slower shutter speeds, you will probably want to use a tripod. I would say that it's worth more than it costs when it's bundled like this. It's kind of like shooting with a lens like this in film days when there was no VR. You have to decide if you can live with the limitations or not.

I like Faststone for simple edits and RAW conversion. http://www.faststone.org/download.htm
I've been playing around with Darktable for windows for a few days now, and I think that it shows a lot of promise. It might be a replacement for Lightroom, depending on what you want to do. Here's the latest snapshot installer if you want to try it.
https://pixls.us/files/darktable-2.3.0%2B1024~gec24c9282-win64.exe It too is free.
Hope this helps.

Sorry to not clarify. I'm using a Mac and the exit file is viewable when opening a photo with preview utility

Oh that's fine kcooke, you didn't need to clarify. That's cool that the Macs will show the exif data. I just wanted to tell folks about PIE.
As for the refurbished cameras, I've had great luck with Nikon brand from Cameta Camera. They're like new with low shutter counts and I have never had to use the one year warranty that they provide free of charge.

On a Nikon it can be found in the exif data file that goes with the photo

Go here and download PIE, it's free. https://www.picmeta.com/ Just click on a picture in your library. The shutter count for Nikon will be in the EXIF data under Nikon. It also works by right clicking on any photo where the EXIF data is still there, and then select EXIF.

Powerex makes some great low discharge rechargeable batteries. Check em out.

I agree with you about Powerex batteries. And for a really good charger this one is hard to beat.

I've been using one for 6 years with no problems, and it keeps my low discharge high mAh AAs in great shape.

A lot of "photographers" I know hate flash. This photographer probably is one of them. It's easy to hate flash if you don't know what you're doing - you'd get the overexposed, harsh look that's horrible. The secret in using flash is to bounce or get it off the camera (and bounce) AND not to use too much flash. The preferred mix between ambient light and flash light should be no more than 75/25%. To keep it simple, under expose the shot maximum 2 stops then use flash to fill in that 2 stops...Doing this, one can't tell whether flash has been used...You would have succeeded if without exif they can't tell you have used flash...Incidentally the Gary Fong that you have is a great bouncer - you waste a lot of light but then rechargeable batteries last all night and they're cheap. I have a number of flash diffusers including Gary Fong...it's silly looking but it works better than most others. When people give me a hard time for using it, I often joked that it doubles as my salad bowl...

I use the Gary Fong Lightsphere in bounce position a lot for indoor shots. I love the soft diffused light and the resulting images that I get with it. As you say, if you have a powerful flash and use good high mAh rechargeable batteries, there is really no wasted light. It's just a different kind of light, the kind that you need to make some great indoor images.

I read that somewhere as well.

I'm a believer. I know they're much cheaper bodies, but I have a D3200 (AA filter) and a D5300 (no AA filter). The fabric in some of my wife's blouses have a color pattern that produces moire when shot with the D5300, but not with the older D3200 when using the same lens. They are both 24mp bodies.

I'm thinking about buying the D5500 bundle with the 18-55 VR lens and 70-300 lens from Nikon for $600.00. The 70-300 is not the VR lens. I'm thinking about buying this bundle and selling the 70-300 lens without VR feature and purchasing the 70-300 VR AF-S ED-IF FX lens. I like the feel and touch of the D5500 versus the D7200. I don't think weight will be a problem. Will this lens combination 18-55 VR along with the 70-300 AF-S ED-IF FX lens work and be suitable for my first camera. The total price will be around $1,000 if I'm able to sell the 70-300 lens without VR for around $100.00. I will be traveling to Oregon coast this summer and plan on using camera for wildlife, Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields ,outdoor pictures of old barns, bridges and structures etc. Probably will not take many indoor pictures or portraits. My budget is around $1,000 for my first camera. It is my understanding that the FX lens can be used on a full frame camera down the road. I can always purchase another lens down the road to compliment this combination. Is there a better bundle or set of lenses that will work better for this price. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....Gary

Sounds like a good plan to me. That kit should be all that you need for a while. But I'm fairly sure that you know that Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields are not in Oregon

Duracell NiMH 2500mAh. They're green with a copper top. Local Walmart has them for $10.00 for 4. I've been using them for high powered external flash for over 2 years now, fast recycle time and they hold a charge very well. They can be recharged hundreds of times. For a charger I went here and bought a nice smart charger. www.httpthomasdistributing.com/ I got the Maha MH-C9000, but you may not want or need anything that fancy. They also have a nice assortment of rechargeable batteries at this site. Hope this helps you.
