Time frame?

It varies, but when I look at old VHS tapes, the degradation seems to begin within the first 10-20 years. I haven't had a computer that reads 5-1/4 floppies so I can't guess. I know the old "ZIP" drives were showing degradation after 20 years.

How about floppies. I have a couple of Kodak floppies. Thought about them the other night while watching an action movie where someone shoves a floppy into a computer. Thankfully I would always opt for the prints also.

The problems with floppies and other magnetic tape media is that the polymer matrix "relaxes" and iron particles reorient then data are lost.

Mechanical devices will fail. The only question is, "When?"

This why I periodically shoot a roll of Tri X of my family members, especially the younger one so that my "stuff" will include some B/W prints and negatives. I'm still working with some of my dad's negatives which are 100 years old.

[quote=bikinkawboy] You don’t do it with just one menu item change but you must change two. Otherwise you have it stuck on back button focus like I did and you can’t disengage it.

Maybe you can help me disengage the BBF on my D5300. I set it a while ago, but must have used the "one button" method you described in your post. Now, when I want to hand the camera to someone, I can't disengage the BBF function of the AE/AL button.

I don't think any of the cameras "have" back-button focus. You have to reassign button functions to get it. So the real question is, which cameras allow the reassignment from shutter release button focusing to back-button focusing..

I did it on my D5300

[quote=larryepage On a full-frame camera, it's an f/2.8 normal lens with a small amount of adjustment on either side. I'd just use a fast 50mm lens,
I agree. Had a 35-70 and felt my fast 50 mm served 90% of my purposes withing this focal length range.

[quote=bikinkawboy]If by BBF you mean back button focus, the Nikons lower on the food chain don’t have that feature.
With the help from this forum, I programmed my D5300 for back button focus. But no "red fish" in evidence:)

I was looking for a pocket travel camera for when I don’t want to travel with my DSLR. I spent some time looking and went to a camera store to look and feel. They seemed small in my hand. I couldn’t decide and realized the technology was in most cases 5 years old. Then I read a post on UHH about the snapgrip about the same time as the iPhone 15 came on the radar. As one prominent photographer said consider it a camera that also makes phone calls. I took it on a cruise with some port visits. I couldn’t be happier with the decision.

For a pocket camera, I use a Nikon P7800. It shoots RAW, nice zoom range, built in flash. Available on eBay.

Was she using a lens that does not have a built-in autofocus motor? Since the D5000 does not have a built-in focus motor, it would need such lenses (Nikkor AF-S, AF-P type, for example) in order for autofocus to work.

make sure BBF isn't engaged if this model can do that. I know the D50xx series can do BBF.

I grant you, this lens was overpriced. Used now about $400 or so.

The thing is he already has those focal lengths covered so what is the real upgrade. Wouldnt adding focal range on either end of what he already has ve a bigger upgrade?

I have a 16-80 and a 24-120 and had an 18-140 in the past. OP can gain a weight advantage with the 16-80 IF that is an important consideration. I am sorry I parted with the 18-140.

So why not buy a second Z8 and set it in DX mode, leave the other in FX mode?

The first two reasons that come to my mind are $3800 (on sale) and 32.1oz (about the same weight as a D850).

If you are not married to Nikon, I can highly recommend the more in-expensive Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 - see the user reviews .....

Does the Sigma offer more of anything? Resolution? Color accuracy? weather resistance? lower weight? more durable construction?
Not a criticism, just curious since I have not had any Sigma lenses.

Wondering if the Nikon 16-80mm 2.8-4E would be a good replacement for the older 24mm 2.8 and 35-70mm 2.8 AF Nikkors I've been using for years. My primary camera is a D500. I'm assuming the 4 means it has a variable aperture. Thanks in advance.

Mine works fine, but may not be a "Steller" lens. You could save some weight in your kit, but would give up the fixed 2.8 aperture.
