A picture, IMHO, stands on its own. I don't care how the maker got there.

The only exception I make is if someone claims the image to be something it isn't.

When I look at a picture I can pretty quickly decide if I like it or not. If I like it I may look a little long thinking about why I like it. I don't care about post processing, unless it was done poorly.

I think Bill strikes the essence here. The images--all images--stand alone. The need for disclosure today or yesterday is when an image is represented to portray a subject faithfully but the image alterations distort that faith.

Exposure and faithful (not cutting something of significance out) cropping and framing are fine and expected. Distortion of an implicit representation (as opposed to artistic manipulation of an artistic subject) isn't.

Our medium is so flexible and consistently more portable and instantaneous than other art forms, that we very often can become confused between an artistic rendering using a photographic process and real-time reportage, or, even formal documentation as in editorial illustration and actual journalistic news event reporting.

All the more to keep us on our visual and intellectual toes.

Many cars in that era had suicide doors. I wish they had none. As a child I succeeded in opening a car's back suicide door and made a quick exit from the vehicle. Fortunately we were not traveling very fast, maybe 15 mph or less and my injuries were minor and without lasting effects, other than learning and remembering to not open the door of a moving vehicle.

I used an FM22 and that 50mm f2 for my return to college photo education. It was excellent and never failed me. It is a great choice for that vital part of Photographic Understanding. Don't miss teh Darkroom smell, though.

You should include Taos in your itinerary.

When I attended Santa Fe Photo Workshops, my group led by Eddie Soloway camped out near Taos in i believe, Chama. The morning light is unbelievable and really only approachable by spending the night outdoors. The Santa Fe area proper could fill several books. While we're driven to see and capture more in these once in a lifetime trips, and often have others to please and who so wonderfully tolerate us; may I suggest that you concentrate your photocentric time in and around Santa Fe where there are a treasure trove of adobe courtyards, homes with walls of constant shadow displays. There are architectural and natural small subjects for detail projects during the harsh mid-day light. The evenings are magic--the light has an unique quality that shouldn't be missed. Their BLUE hour is something to behold and, oh yeah PHOTOGRAPH.

If you have extended time after exhausting Santa Fe, go for it. Or, give Santa Fe a good workout and play snapshot tourist, with an occasional Photographic Capture to please the curiosity and interest of your companions.

I think all of the advice here is sound. The BASICS of street safety is street and situation awareness.

Keep the sling bag across your chest. Keep valuables in a money belt or pouch UNDER your clothing. With the little Leica first, tape over the red dot. Second, wear a light over shirt/jacket and have the camera under it.

Your health and lives are hore important than any camera. Certainly don't put yourself into a situation that is crowded, and be careful to not draw attention to yourself.

You lived in Paris. You know where to go, and where Never to go--already. Wear clothes that blend into Paris style. For example, NEVER wear white shoes!!! (It's an ugly look everywhere but screams Ugly American to many Euro types). Same for the US themed shirts and hats.

Like everything else--after you're done using it, camera, phone or wallet--PUT IT AWAY. NEVER walk near the curb. A friend's mother was killed in London by a Purse snatcher on a motor bike. Since you like street photography, then you're used to looking around at everything to capture a composition or subject. That means 360 degrees. Add suspicious--and broaden your definition-- characters. Do not ignore teenagers or women. You lead teh dance. Keep moving, stay visible toe everyone and keep you stuff covered and put away.

I love Paris, I'm jealous. Enjoy the trip and the wonderful people and cuisine.

Wrapping straps tightly has its plusses and minuses. BUT, old as it is, I like my arm more than I like my camera, etc. But leaving it out in plain sight, and free to grab is creating an attractive nuisance, in other words, tempting fate in a place where there are some very accomplished pick pockets, grab artists and distraction specialists.

This little corner of Europe is exceptionally charming. At the confluence of Swiss, Italian and Austrian culture there is a variety of musical and culinary treats available everywhere to complement the incomparable scenery.

Also a trip up Monte Verata where the pre WWII artist colony including Collette Colbert frolicked.

This entire area has a special feeling about it. The people are wonderful and I'd go back at the drop of a $2K lottery win! All my images are carefully preserved in several hundred Ektachrome slides.

Interesting, and good to know. How about low light shots? How well would they print large, especially cropped?
I have an iPhone 11.

I'm a camera bigot, but I also have an iPhone 11 and I'm surprised at the flexibility of teh native camera app, the zooming capability, the selective focus and selective exposure features. It rivals teh Photo + and Camera + etc. extra photo apps.

If memory serves, my iPhones usually exceeded the early point and shoots many of us learned on. My 11 is best of all so far. But, truth be told, if I intend to make a photograph, I use my camera.

I emphasize this side trip for anyone making a business trip to San Francisco. It is, or was, easily accessible by ferry and a tour/shuttle mini bus. The primary trails are paved so even old school business dress shoes (for men) are suitable. And I know the ladies always have something suitable stashed in their "bags." This is a heavily shaded spot, so it holds to the old Mark twain "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Not a true statement cuz Virginia City NV, where he lived for a while, is lots colder in the winter than SF ever thought of being. Still, fair warning. The sun is out, but the air is cool, and feels cold in the shade. Note how many brand new San Francisco Sweatshirts adorn entire families of SF tourists. A REAL money maker!

I used to take the side trip on days I was seeing customers in the North Bay. Very relaxing.

The Canon Camera app for, among other things, remote triggering is excellent. However, while I paired my old SE phone, I can't seem to pair my new I phone 11 via Bluetooth. I'll keep trying. I also use Camera + as my photo app, but the newer apple native app allows enough flexibility that I'll stick with it.

You have listed a number of reasons I do not use iPhone. The big one being, IT IS NOT INTUITIVE!!!!! (You did not directly say that, but it is imbedded in what you did say) All this crap about Apple being intuitive drives me crazy!!!! Even people I know who are long time iPhone users say they L O V E it, but then have trouble finding apps, switching between apps, having their screens crack, etc..... And adjusting to iOS changes.... Don't get me started about how they struggle!
And finding out they have lost photos because they did not upgrade their icloud account and they could not figure out how to download the images to their computer because.....well Apple does not want THAT to be easy!!!
I just do not get the iPhone fanboy sickness.
You have listed a number of reasons I do not use i... (show quote)

So, now I've found the OTHER guy who can't make "Apple Intuitive" work for him. When I was working in Silicon Valley in the '80's, our office bought ONE original Mac for Sales Reps to type Proposals and important letters on. And for others to do newsletters and other publishing. I was the Old guy laughing stock. I have an iPhone because it is better than an Android, which isn't saying much. But I curse my old Office Neighbor, Stevie Jobs multiple times a day.

Any photos worth keeping are worth processing to completion in LR on my PC. I use the camera to snap Serial numbers placed inconveniently on my appliances so I can buy the right spare parts, and I keep my vaccination card photo there--just in case.

But I do use the maps and the Browser for factoids and a convenient dictionary and encyclopedia for unfamiliar words, places and names. That's really convenient. And texting avoids "telephone tag."

The old guy who cares even less, now, how dumb folks think I am,

"Chance" as in giving your photograph a "Chance to be good" because of knowledge and ANTICIPATION. Great captures of Soccer (futbol) action with the context of the field position and teh composition.

Thanks for sowing this young lady and her game in a great context. Varsity will be better when she gets there--in her due time.

Looks like you nailed it on #2 and 3. A tricky proposition with "flighty" subjects. Just enough to add a little sparkle and that 3rd dimension.
