rlv567 glad I could stir some memories. I to ride motorcycles, for over 55 years. I owned a 1973 Norton Commando for 31 years. Most recently fulfilled a bucket list item of one I was supposed to do 45 years ago. I rode around the continental U.S. 9500 miles in 28 days. Went through 29 states, in wind rain heat cold snow and sleet. I would do it again at the drop of a hat.

Shelby had a good thing going there. I used to watch them and other great machines at the sports car road races in Southern California. In November, 1957, I saw the epic race at Riverside with Carroll Shelby, Masten Gregory, Ken Miles (masterful #50 Porsche driver) and Dan Gurney, in his first race, driving an ill-handling 4.9 Ferrari. Shelby eventually won, but Gurney was leading for much of the race, and for most of the time you could have thrown a blanket over those four cars, it was so close. That race is what started Dan Gurney's great career, and may have been one of the greatest sports car road races of all time.
Back then, I watched all the races from Willow Springs, Riverside Raceway, Pomona up to Santa Barbara airport. I went up to Santa Barbara from Mission Hills for one race day on a Harley Davidson 74 full dress which I had just bought (used) - and came all the way back in the rain! It was my first motorcycle - and I never had ridden even a bicycle previously. Those were the days!!! for many reasons! (And it was my only Harley); a City of Los Angeles car took me out at an intersection in San Fernando, and got away without paying for my injuries and the damages. An adjuster sat in my office and took all the information, but didn't tell me that all claims had to be filed within a very limited time, and I was still in physical therapy, didn't officially file, so got nothing. An attorney later told me that was the way the city got out of paying some 90% of the just claims against them. They had written that "law".
Thanks for the great pictures - and memories.
