I do natural light shooting in places like Birdland in NYC. I shoot at the highest ISO 1600 on my G10. I like the grain (noise) because I think it adds to the photos and in a way better represents the club and the musicians. So, noise or grain, I think, is in the eyes of the beholder.

Sometimes noise adds to a shot ! Goes back to film days....for me at least !!

WOW! Might as well flaunt my ignorance1 I had NO idea there was such a huge number of ISO!What can you DO with such a thing?

Hate to seem ignorant, but...NOISE??? In photograph??? Is this a hearing thing? What can it mean????

Thanks very much who ever of you send this article to me! It send a picture with 3 different ISO for 3 same pictures. Of color. Very clear! I think noise mean with a picture have lot of light in the film for you to take--maybe no estra light help--then the colors won't be so sharp. If they are not sharp color, means they are noisy. Right? Interesting using noise that way!!!

You missed it...."noise" is the "graininess" look to the image ! That comes from the days of film. Look at those 3 images again...the play-doh on the left, at 1600 ISO, has a grainy look....the one on the right, ISO 100 has no grain. Look at the pictures close.

I printed it out and so I have that right here. It's clear to see a difference for sure. That ISO 1600 shot is dirty and dark in the color. Does dirty mean grainy and grainy mean noisy? I apologize. I am not trying to be stubborn. I can't get that to mean noise. Noise to me is loud sound, and since I don't hear any sound, I'm having a hard time hook up that word to color. The article is exellent. I copied that so that I will have it. The pictures are good. Must be I'm having a language problem. Always a possibility with me!

hey buckeye i'm with you all the way on thier use of the word noise, but that word was in place long before i got into cameras. so guess you an me are stuck in the middle.. an life goes on... i just refer to the other name grain. i took a picture at 32000 iso an it looked like termites at work on it an the tunnels had caved in

Now that I've thrown my 2 cents in on a few threads.

I live in Denver, Co area. I am a computer geek with a background in electronic assembly and testing.

For those who are curious about my name, I spent five years building cables for the Titan rockets and had the pleasure of working on the Magellan spacecraft.

I grabbed my Canon DSLR after my brother let me play with his Nikon D60. I mostly take pictures of my kid, but also like landscapes, clouds and low light. The concept of light painting intrigues me.

Spent my formative years in NYC, which resulted in " Hey you guys, High!!!!!!!, hows ya dooin', ya'll ?"
quote=Michael O' quote=sammytalia7 For those of ... (show quote)

Way back when I was 16 or 17 and had a lot of hearing, I was in the old L & N train line going back to SW Louisiana for the summer. Early we started accross Lake Ponchartrain & I decided to comb my hair so went to the ladie's room. One person there was a very kindly looking older lady. She greated me and I asked where she was going, or something. She told me. I THINK she was going to visit, or take home, or something her son (I think) from the Charity Hosp in NO. Since I wasn't "getting it" I decided it must be an old Cajun French, so I switched my brain to French. Didn't work. Switched back. I finally figured out--a year or so later--that she was from the Ozarks. Deep in there. And I SO wanted to go and meet people and learn that English. Couple of years later, my hearing totally left me, so never got to go there. I WISH I could remember how she sounded. I can only remember what she looked like. Very clearly. Language is such a grand thing!

Thanks, I think a lot of us spend to much time here???

I think I must pass more time here than I should be with my cameras and photographs! I learn a lot, enjoy a lot, and get really kind help with my lack of knowledge! Can't beat that!

Yeah! BROKE by all means! I've studied on it, and decide it's just an annoying term that I can't get over with. I like 'Alive and Well and On My Way" a whole lot better!
