Use Search on your computer for ".lrcat". If the computer finds it, double clicking it should open LR.

When you import them into Lightroom do they automatically become "unzipped" and ready for use or is there another step?
Thank you for your replies.
Don

They do not unzip themselves. You need to do so prior to installing them, either via your operating system or another program.

Which ever one you have in your hands will produce far better shots than the one sitting back on the shelf.

Therefore, one deduces that it's NEVER the CAMERA.

Lee, don't forget Sony and Olympus or Pentax, which each offer high quality DSLR camera models within your price range that compete successfully with both the items mentioned above.

The Sony A65 is an EXCELLENT camera for the price; extremely powerful with very high image quality. Olympus has the OM-D E5, and Pentax has the very good K-5 mark II.

These cameras are as good as or BETTER than their canikon counterparts in may ways, and well worth a look.

The Pentax also has the advantage of weather resistance if that is of any concern.

Did you know you could INCREASE the font size on a computer for easier reading? You may also increase or decrease the brightness of your monitor. You can't do that with a magazine. Also, you won't have evidence of your magazine hoarding laying around the house. Just one more thing, most online publications allow you to view the previous issues, but more importantly you can search their indices instead of wondering which issue did the helpful article on f-stops. But if you still have the need to hold that dead forest in your hands, go right ahead.

Yes, I realize that most all you state is true. However, when I get a hard copy magazine in the mail, I almost immediately browse through it, reading the most interesting articles right away. That never happened when I got the email that a new edition of my electronic subscription(s) was released.

I already spend too much time on the computer. When I read a hard copy, I can at least be in the same room while my wife reads on her Nook.

Lastly, we have an effective paper recycling program here. Using some paper makes me feel no more guilty than using electrons that were generated from fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms.

Also look into Pentax. I have a K5 and and their latest, a K3 and love them both. One photo magazine rated the K3 better than a comparable Canon and equal to or better than a comparable Nikon depending on the features you want.

I would go with the Nikon, simply because you already have two Nikon lenses.

  Smart choice since you have the lenses. Otherwise open yourself up to considering a Pentax K-3.

2. My primary tip for any that ask is to take an organized course. My favorite

is Laura Shoe's "LR5: The Fundamentals and Beyond". Although this is a complete course, it is set up in modules that are graded as to basic, intermediate and advanced techinques. Although the DVD course is not free, she does offer free tips on her website. She has also taught on CreativeLive.com (free while live on line).

For some reason unknown to me, my computer no longer recognizes my camera when I plug the two together to download photos. An older computer recognizes the camera and permits downloads.

Websites suggest this is not an uncommon problem. But I cannot find on Canon or other sites a solution (presumably downloading something to computer to recognize digital camera) . Any suggestions?

I don't believe that this is a Canon hardware or software issue (although having the camera shut off so quickly might prove me wrong). Windows 7 AutoPlay may be the culprit (Control Panel/Hardware and Sound). In their AutoPlay Help section they mention that if a media program is open in an active window, it can cancel the corresponding AutoPlay setting. MS further states that holding down the Shift key when you insert your device will open AutoPlay regardless of the default setting. I hope this leads to a solution for you.

I am trying to learn about RAW processing. I use Lightroom 5 and would also be interested in knowing some forum users who also use Lightroom... Any help would be appreciated. BoJacK6

I use LR5 and always shoot RAW. As others have noted, if you have specific questions, many will respond. On the other hand, if you would like a rather complete How To course, look up Laura Shoe's website. She is a great instructor and has free tips on her site in addition to the courses she sells.

Another good learning tool is creativelive.com. They have some excellent multi-day courses on LR available. Check their calendar, as their courses are free while live.

Totally agree with Searcher - and the same goes for many other questions.

The other common annoyance is when someone asks for suggestions for gear within a fixed budget and they get recommendations of gear costing four times as much or more.

Another peeve is when someone asks about members' experience with "X" and everyone responds with their experience with what they own instead.

I use LR and ran into this mess and luckily figured it out but I have seen other oddities in LR. Why so much complexity from LR? Other programs don't give us these headaches or surprises.........I'm still looking for ability to " add text" to photo lol....cheers......

If you move a previously edited Word, Excel, or even PDF file, then open the application and use the file list to re-open the file, the same thing will happen. The application will not be able to find the file.

If you wish to add text to a photo in LR, you may add a Title and Caption in the Library Module under Metadata. If you want the text to actually be visible on the photo, you may use the Print Module and then under Page show Photo Info select or add what you want. You could also use the Watermarking or Identity Plate to accomplish similar things. This capability may also be available in the Slideshow and/or Web modules.
