Your not playing us. We're good at reigning in self satisfied newbies who come on board and immediately start telling us what's what. We're glad you like your gear but it is neither minimal nor would it meet the general photography needs of a great many of us here. Your gear is OK, but really nothing special. You are obviously out of your league and perhaps you should work on humble for a while.

And by the way you asked the question in the thread title, "What is the best minimal set-up for general photography?" It appears you set yourself up for the responses that followed since your equipment doesn't qualify as best in any category.

My camera gear does not define me, nor does it define any of you. Any idiot with a credit Card can buy a digital Hassy. If y'all knew the league I played in you'd be silent as mice. Photography is something I do for relaxation. I have no reason to be humble. Trust me.

Now if that is an original Mini Cooper S then that has serious class. If you haven't seen the original "Italian Job" movie - not the pathetic remake - you need to. And even if it is the modern Mini Cooper S they're still very good vehicles for those that understand them.

It's not an original. It's a 2011 with the sport mode option. When that is selected it does some interesting things. Some tend to make my wife wet herself.

Welcome to UHH Streets, glad you joined us. Must be something to photograph in Euless. Wildlife, desert scenes, macro, small town street photography, etc.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

You're right Don, I can always photograph these: they're only two miles away.

You don't need to hate your camera or yourself unless one or the other is severely lacking in some significant area which requires a change. And I like Minis. Maybe you should take a deep breath and start over.

I love you guys. I'm playing you like a Stieinway Piano and you're all serious and cerebral.

19 posts on this forum and already you are name calling, denigrating, acting superior, lecturing...

Following in the footsteps of the lowest members of this forum.

Your definition of "general photography" as taking pictures of whatever doesn't shoot back is interesting, but for that you are definitely ill-prepared with your gear.

Personally, I don't like Sony cameras. Lousy menus, lousy controls, and a stupid hot shoe that's incompatible with the rest of the world. I had one; luckily it got stolen so I could replace it with an Olympus.

WOW! I'm starting to hate my camera choice AND myself. I'm almost afraid to mention that I drive a Mini Cooper S. Oh the shame! Think I'll join a suicide forum.

You might want to elaborate.

Your first two shots were really nice. The third was really awful. I like women too much, I guess. That type of photo manipulation is not art and does little to show the beauty of the nude woman. Two out of three is a .667 batting average if you want to look at the bright side.

Hmmm. Accurate description of people from southern California? So in other words you think that as a group they are shallow? And your name calling diatribe was not an angry response? And finally I pissed you off for even asking you politely why you needed to insult an entire region in your response to him? Interesting. Welcome to the hog. I'm sure you'll make lots of friends here.

Why don't you just relax a bit. Think it over and ask yourself if you really have to come to the defense of others who you probably don't know and might not even like if you met them. People like me, for example.

The OP never really answer the 2 questions.
1. What is considered general photography.
2. What does it mean by minimal. Minimal cost or minimal equipment?

As much as I hate answering stupid questions, I will make a onetime exception. General photography is the act of pointing a camera at anything that will not find the act offensive. Minimal set-up refers to what is needed to do a task efficiently. Amature photographers will not need the same set-ups as professionals need. You were the only one that had a problem responding to this thread. Some self-reflection might come in handy.

Honestly I think the issue you had with one poster may be a miscommunication. He may have thought you were bragging about your equipment based on the title of the thread and the extensive enthusiasm you showed towards it. At first reading that's what I thought as well. I realized after a second reading that all you meant was that your modest equipment more than met your needs and gave you great pleasure to use. That's great! What I don't understand though is why in your angry response to him you felt the need to denigrate people from Southern California as if they were somehow shallow and as a group needed to be impressed. That was unnecessary.

Thank you for your accurate description of people from SoCal. That was not an angry response. He just needed a talking to. When someone intimates that my equipment is somehow inferior, he or she will be corrected. As to your reply: well it pissed me off a bit too. I'm too old for dealing with people who are wont to correct others.

The a57 is no longer produced, superseded by the a58 and a68. The rest is medium range gear. Now if you said an a77ii, with a 24-70mm Sony lens, a Sony 70-200mm lens, then I would be impressed.

I see that you are from SoCal and need to be impressed. My A57 and small lens inventory impress the hell out of me, you sanctimonious twit, and that's all that matters.

I was referring to minimal equipment for an "enthusiast" level photographer, what most of us are. I would say that 16 megapixel camera with a lens combo from 18-300mm would suit our needs. I realize that some of us have lens ranges much wider and higher M.P. count camera bodies as well as full frame set ups.
