I backed up to a Western Digital 4TB Passport a while ago - all that was needed was to plug it in and follow directions. Lengthy the first time, quick / invisible after that. Inexpensive insurance!

Do you backup your backup?
Yes all drives are subject to fail.
Sometimes rather abruptly. Oops to late then to backup your backup.
Three backup drives should be fine.
I have 4 backup drives for all my data and photos.
The drives with my backed up music files are on a seperate 4 drives.
Three of each backup drives of both data and music is then stored in a fire resistant safe.
I used to service computers and it wasn't pleasant to see people with tears in their eyes after they
lost all their files.
Backup, backup, and backup again.
Never, ever, ever rely on only 1 or 2 backups.

This stand is in excellent condition.
But I did modify it.
I wanted it very stable for use with a Nikon D7000 and a 17-55mm Nikkor lens.
Really stable. Heavy without any flexing.
Comes with 2 LED bulbs and 2 150 watt photo bulbs.
Also a homemade stand to support the stand.
It goes without saying, Local pickup only.
$100.00
The stand was $200.00 plus bulbs.

I remember seeing them.
Winchester drive that is.
The first hard drive's I had experience with was a Seagate 5-1/4 10mb.
When I installed this new HUGE drive (84mb 3.5") in a customers machine after checking with engineering to see if our BTOS computer could format and use a drive that size.
Until till then the largest we used was a 5-1/4 half-height 40mb.
Our floorstanding word processor (the first in the world to utilize a screen) used 5-1/4 360k floppies.
Or a mag-card reader to load the OS and storage.
48K memory.
40k for the system.
8k for the video.

OMG 4tb for $97? I am old enough to remember kB drives it is amazing how technology has marched forward. Storage technology has outpaced my need for storage. How good is that ? Anyway I salute you for understanding that digital data is tenuous and multiple copies are needed to assure longevity.

And you have to leap-frog the data forward as technology changes.

I recall reading about the latest in hard drive advancements regarding the largest drive to date.
1 gb. So expensive it was only offered on a lease. Not for sale.
How about 16mb's of memory for a fantastic price of only $600.00.

That should do it!

A question. If the first drive dies during import, would not the images still be available for re-copying from the SD card?

Yes they are.
That is why I copy them to the first drive.
If that drive happens to fail, I can still copy them to the second drive.
Then the rest of my drives.
Of course if the first drive doesn't fail I'm happy.
Drives are so cheap.
I purchased another 4tb WD drive at Wallyworld today for $97.00.

I backup my pictures and all important data to six usb drives.
Three of which I keep in a fire resistant safe.
Good for a 1,700 degree fire for one hour.
I copy, not cut and paste from the memory card to drive one and then the others.
Just incase the first drive dies before I copy them out.

I knew a guy whos car was much worse than that car.
Oops! I've known two guys with cars worse that the one.
Each one required major rearranging of garbage just to find the front seat.
Never mind sitting in it!

I once ran a computer service call to a home in Stony Brook NY whose home was WAYYYYY worse
than that car. I had to walk through narrow pathway of junk inside the home to reach ware the room
where the computer was.
One of the homeowners had a serious hording problem.
