Wall-E, thank you for the great tip. We are setting up a slightly different set this weekend with costume changes and I will try your suggestion.

You all are so helpful. I have only Picasa on my desktop and PS Elements 10 on my laptop. But I don't really care to try editing much on my laptop because of sitting at the just the right angle to make sure I like the exposure, hue , saturation etc. of my photo.

Thanks so much for the help. We are having fun with the dogs and they seem to enjoy it too. Keeping them out of the treasure chest can sometimes be challenging.

I took this photo and I cannot get the blue hue out without over exposing the white/gray color. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

Something I forgot yesterday. The closer to the horizon the sun looks bigger to the naked eye ( works that way for the moon also). This is an optical illusion. The camera captures the real size. The next time there is a full moon just above the horizon and it looks vert big, look through a small hole made by your thumb and forefinger and you will see the difference.

Thanks, thats a neat bit of information.

Quite lovely indeed. Were these images shot with the camera hand held or on a tripod?

All three shots were handheld. The last two were standing on the stern of a ferry.

Your first picture is the best of the three because the sky occupies nearly the two upper thirds of the picture. That generally is best for sunsets composition. Further, it looks like you used a telephoto lens for that one, and the telephoto makes the sun larger. The opposite with a wide angle lens that shrinks it, which appears to be what you did in the other two pictures. Using a very small aperture, perhaps f22, will make some radiation from the
sun more visible, but then you might need a tripod. A graduate ND filter might also help to get a better sun image.
Your first picture is the best of the three becaus... (show quote)

Thanks, for the advice. I have lots of little things to try and I get to buy a nd filter too. I did use a telephoto on the first photo.

There is going to be some atmospheric disturbance which will soften sharpness. The closer to the horizon the more the disturbance. the onnly way to improve this is in post processing. Bracketing both in speed and focal length may help. A polarizer might help with reflections off the water. Maybe not but it's worth a try.

Thank you..I will try different speeds and focal lengths.

It looks to me like you're letting the camera decide on the focus. Switch over to manual focus and try that. If the sun is to bright to look at, then focus on something else that's far away. To keep the foreground in focus, slow the camera down and use a smaller aperture. Auto focus is great but you have understand it's limitations. Open area shots, such a yours, is when the camera needs your help.

Bingo! on the auto focus! I will try slowing the camera down too and give it a go this weekend. Thanks....

I am having problems with getting a crystal clear sun photo. My little Olympus Digital took great sunsets but my new Nikon D5100 is testing me. I know it is me but I would sure appreciate tips and help. Thanks!

I cropped this photo but that was it. Do you think the water drops are too distracting?

As an amateur photographer, what is the best procedure for taking pictures of other people's children? Is there a standardized form for the parent to sign? These photos would potentially be submitted to contests. Thanks for the advice.
