Hello Hoggers. Well, I did it. I sold two older pieces of equipment to KEH and bought a FZ1000. It arrived last Tuesday and I couldn't wait to play with it. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of a triple digit heat wave so I had to content myself with taking some shots around the house and yard. Yesterday it only got to 90 degrees (!) so we spent a couple of hours at the zoo. I have a lot to learn: so many buttons and functions!! I'm slowly going through the manual and just experimenting. Here are a few shots I've taken so far.

Used?

Yes. Can't afford a new one. KEH's website says they offer a six month warranty. That's better than the 90 days from the manufacturer on refurbished.

Many thanks to all who responded. I will do the trade-ins and put towards the FZ1000.

In July my husband and I will be taking a Coral Princess cruise to Alaska. Our stops include Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. What excursions should we sign up for to get some great photos in any of these places?
Thanks in advance for your help.

In Juneau, if you want to see Mendenhall glacier, don't take the ship excursion. Right at the wharf there are buses (used to be blue) that for a very reasonable RT fee will take you there. Another advantage is that they run every half hour so you can take your time and don't have to worry about missing the ship's tour bus.

On our Princess Cruisetour, from Skagway we took a White Pass tour, and from Juneau we went on the Mt. Roberts tramway, bused to Hubbard glacier, and walked to the Alaska State Museum.

The White Pass train excursion is definitely worth it.

I have had the Lumix FZ 1000 for exactly a year(bought 5.29.16) and have been very happy with it. Have just started playing around with the video and been happy with that also.

I'm curious what used price you are finding. You can get new on Amazon from other sellers for penneys less that $700 and no tax every 2-3 weeks, then it jumps back up to $800 for a while.. I would want a substantial discount to go with used, but would not hesitate if the price was right.Just checked and it is 697.99 on Amazon thru Cameta Camera(who I bought mine from).

Cameta had one for $549 and KEH had two, one for $549 and one for $599. I would only buy from Amazon through a known camera company (like Cameta). I bought and returned a camera to them that was gray market (American Camera, I believe).

Dear Pytrouble, I have the Lumix camera and use it when I travel. I works very well. Much, much lighter than the D810 w lens and battery pack.

Thank you.

Since you have been very satisfied with the Canon G9, why not keep it, add the Panasonic for its highly-respected long zoom benefits and sell the damaged Nikon J1 to KEH for parts?

Hmm. Good thought however the main reason for selling the G9 was to help pay for the Panasonic. I also have an old film camera - Pentax K 1000 that I could throw into the mix.

Thank you for the suggestion. Having moved from Seattle to Albuquerque, I find the need to use a viewfinder more frequent.

Hello UHH users. Although I have been reading the discussions for several months, this is my first post. I have enjoyed the collective wisdom, the humor, and the general back and forth of the members. Now I have two questions. I have a Canon G9 that has served me well and is in fact what got me interested in more serious photography. I also own a Nikon 1 V1 mirrorless camera that has a non-functioning screen. I can still shoot using the EVF which is fine but it's a pain to review pics and access the menus through the view finder. (Estimates via email from Nikon are almost as much as I paid for the camera!) I also own a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 which I acquired for a potential long hike in Europe. I am thinking of trading in my G9 for a bridge camera. I definitely do not want an SLR as I have neck problems and don't like a lot of weight and prefer a fixed lens. My first thought (after reading about it on UHH) was a refurbished or used Canon SX60. However, in researching the sale of my G9 on Cameta and KEH websites (which I also learned about from UHH - thank you), I ran across a used Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000. I did some research: it has excellent reviews and even read two reviews that directly compared it to the Canon SX60. Now to my questions (finally): I have read good things from you hoggers about refurbished equipment. However, I'm a little more anxious about purchasing a used camera. Any wisdom or experience you can share along those lines would be greatly appreciated. Second question: although the FZ1000 has excellent reviews, I would like to hear from any of you who may have direct experience with that camera. Thank you in advance.
