I live in Virginia Beach. A good place to go would be Back Bay Wildlife refuge. There is access to the shore there (non-bathing--just wildlife viewing), as well as walks along dikes and other trails.

JKATPC,
Thanks for that eureka moment. I hadn't thought of High Speed Synch for this purpose but it works assuming the background is far enough away and the flash power is adjusted for the situation. I was surprised that the recycle time did not seem to be affected since that is one of the shortfalls of the technique. True enough, however, the battery charge did drop noticibly.
I can't wait to play with this some more.

I never really thought about recycle time since I hardly got a second chance (although they fly away, they need the sugar fix). As for battery charge, not sure what the effect was since I only had a shot once every five or ten minutes. Seemed to last quite a while, though.

If you can pull it off, high speed sync naturally provides a dark background. You do have to get the flashes close to the subject and use a very high shutter speed. Here's one I took of a hummingbird feeding midday, lots of sun.

Nice! I remember the many hummingbirds when we lived in California. They were quite the little bosses!

I love the action in these. You really get a sense of what little acrobats they are.

Thanks, Vicki! I think a lot of it is luck, though, since they are so fast.

For any who care, camera was a Nikon D7200 with a Tokina 11-16mm at f/8, 1/8000, ISO 100. Two speed lights set up with onboard flash set to commander mode.

I'd love to get any photos like yours. My question/reply does not involve photography as much as it does involve your set up (feeder) for the birds. I can't seem to put out nectar in my feeder before I have a swarm of ants helping themselves and I guess scaring away the birds. How do you avoid this problem ?? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Bill.

Hi, Bill. I don't think I do anything in particular, except maybe the feeder stand (which is really looks like a shepherd's crook, bought at Wildbirds Unlimited, I think) placement. I think the ants favor the peonies over the hummingbird feeder.

Between rain showers, this pretty bird made a visit at my hummingbird feeder.

Hand held @ 800mm. Distance was about 25-35 feet.
