We have started seeing daily visits of Amarican Goldfinches. They are in transition from their winter colors. Most of the males have looked a bit ratty due to the ñew black feathers just starting to show on their heads. This fellow is showing a little more than a 5 o'clock of new growth.
Along with the bright new feathers come the attitudes. These two seemed intent on doing harm to one another, for all of 10 seconds. Than their tummies got the better of them and they returned their focus to peanuts and sunflower seeds.

As I mentioned in my previous posts, last Friday, Joel McIntyre, a neighbor, took my next door neighbor and me to the wildlife preserve at Farmington Bay. After driving us around the area, we returned to the meeting point and he stated that he was about to take a short hike up another path. We opted to go get lunch.

Attached are two SOOC shots by Joel from that hike. Fortunately, Joel has become a member of UHH. He takes school groups and others on tours at the preserve and I am sure that he will provide us with other great views.

We traveled all day to Colorado Springs and back, so not much photo time.

Here is a squirrel cuckoo. I guess they are not super common to see in Costa Rica

Shortly after our three-day freeze event earlier this month, this Rufous Hummingbird showed up feeding on some surviving flowers in my back yard. We immediately put out two feeders and the hummer started visiting occasionally. After almost two weeks, I was finally able to capture these images on a feeder. I believe this is an immature female.

This is the first time I have seen a hummingbird here on North Padre Island in wintertime. Since she arrived in January, my partner Anne named her Jan. What a resilient little bird. Enjoy.

This is the doldrum time for photography in Rapid City at the local lake. The lake is densely populated with Canada geese and migratory ducks. I’m over saturated with geese and duck photos and the local Bald Eagles just sit and watch for hours at a time. So I turn to photographing Kingfishers. They are not easy targets but give a sense of satisfaction when photographed successfully. Here’s one I took recently…

Nice capture.

At the Eccles Wildlife Education Center at Farmington Bay, the local Rocky Mountain Power Company has erected a group of poles with supports that allow great blue herons to nest safely. The herons then gather nest building materials for Spring mating and hatching.

This set shows some of the early arrivals already staking claims. There are about eight poles and they become very popular. As the season goes on, I will provide updates.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Excellent images Mike.
