When my Italian Grandmother was pregnant with my father she was reading Greek mythology about Hercules. My Grandfather was using Hercules dynamite in the coal mines. Fortunately my Dad lived up to the name and was never teased. He went by Herc for short.

Fifty years ago, we had a company named the Hercules Powder Company near here.

My father worked there.
The hanger he was assigned to in Bethpage was used by NASA for the simulated moon landing.
He became a plane caption for LeRoy himself and flew around the world in a Gulfstream.
Had dinner with Idi once.

Ah, yes. The optimism of ignorance! Turns out that getting the different reactants together in just the right way to start a controlled fusion reaction is a lot harder than herding cats, and for a related reason: the reactants will insist on trying do not like being herded and will try to escape from each other and from the containment. There were rumors that cold fusion was about to be or had been achieved for a while in the 1990s but that turned out to be a false alarm.

That said, uncontrolled fusion has been achieved, and considerably earlier than the 1990s. A device incorporating that technology is known today as the H-bomb.
Ah, yes. The optimism of ignorance! Turns out that... (show quote)

I haven't researched this, but I heard it in a speech years ago. The father of the Wright brothers was a bishop (true), and he once said that the last great invention had been produced, and we would see no more in our lifetime. A few years later, his sons were flying.

The LI RR had a "stop" at Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage LI. IIRC, there wasn't a platform, only a step ladder down to the tracks. You'd then have to show your badge to enter the property.

I remember Grumman.

I'm selling a set of 27 Charlie Chan films, and eBay gave me the opportunity to let AI write the description. It did a pretty good job.

"This collection features 27 classic films of Charlie Chan, all packed onto 8 DVDs. Enjoy hours of entertainment with this timeless collection, perfect for any movie lover or fan of the iconic detective. Each DVD includes a variety of films, showcasing the best of the series. Experience the thrill of the mysteries that Charlie Chan and his friends solve, as they travel across the globe to capture criminals and solve puzzles. This collection is a must-have for any fan of the series, and with its convenient format, you can enjoy all 27 films with ease. Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to own a piece of movie history."

I'll use this and add some of my own.

eBay asked me to check the accuracy of the AI description and let them know of any discrepancies.

With a title like that we will probably get pages of comments on how to fix the error!

We need that.

It's too late to edit the title, unfortunately. I hate that one-hour limit.

When I turned on my D750 yesterday, the Live View wouldn't work, and the pop-up flash wouldn't pop up. The battery was low, so I tried a different one. That gave me the "ERR" warning. I saw that the battery indicator was very low - maybe not even showing anything. After I replaced the battery with a charged one, everything worked fine.

The moral of this story is that even though the camera turns on, if the battery doesn't have enough juice (technical term), the camera may not work properly. That's a new one on me - never happened before - but that's probably because I don't wait for the battery to get so low.

This is an AI generated image. I'm afraid that AI is going to be a disaster.

I like seance and Ouija board movies, but I wouldn't want to be involved with either of those things. I don't believe in them, but they're still creepy. Apparently, "Ouija" must be capitalized. Or else!

All my cordless tools are the same brand so the half-dozen batteries I have will fit them all.

Excellent!

I have a cheap drill I use in the house. It's a $38 Tacklife that I bought in 2018. Its single battery lasts a long time, and it comes in handy when I need a drill without going to the garage.

Not to worry. Fusion reactors have been just "30 years away" since 1920 when the idea was first envisioned. At our age, not likely a problem. For our grandkids, probably 30 years away when they get old as well.

Right. "Someday."

Fusion reactors are probably years away, but developers are making progress. Naturally, there is a dark side to this progress.

From NewScientist -
"Fusion reactors could allow a country to accelerate its development of nuclear weapons, producing the necessary radioactive ingredients in as little as a few weeks. Nuclear weapons need specific radioactive isotopes, normally uranium-235 or plutonium-239, that can be easily split to start a chain reaction. This so-called fissile material is rare in nature but can be produced artificially by a source that generates a lot of neutrons, such as a nuclear fission reactor of the kind in use today. Fission reactors take a year to produce enough fissile material to create nuclear weapons, but a fusion reactor may be able to do it in weeks."

When you combine Fusion with AI, high school kids could be building nuclear weapons at home. If that sounds too far out, read the article linked below.

I got an email from a supplier of printer ink suggesting that a bottle of ink would be a great Mother's Day present. Umm. I wonder.

"Oh, Billy, I couldn't love you any more than do right now! A bottle of generic black ink for my printer! I'm going to my lawyer tomorrow and removing your brothers and sisters from my will. You will receive my entire fortune!" 🤣

After fifty years, I've found the perfect mouse trap. These are "forever" traps. They're made out of plastic, so they're easy to "unload" and clean. Unlike all other traps I've used, they never snap as I try to set them or when I put them down. I load the removable bait cup and put the trap on the floor. Then, I simply press down on one end, and that's it. They come with a small book of directions for use. One important direction: "Do not set it upside down." Great advice! 😋
