I second Carole's view, the camera is just a tool, it is the person behind it that makes the photograph.
I've got two nice DSLRs, and a hand full of point and shoots, and some of my best photography has come because I decided to carry a p&s camera with me, instead of no camera.
You can get really good shots with p&s cameras, but depending on the type(s) of photography that interest you, you might find you run into limitations with them. At that time, you can decide whether or not to "upgrade" to a DSLR or mirrorless camera system. Until then, learn the camera you have, and practice with it.

That's very true Howard. I've actually taken a few nice keepers with only my iPhone. Though I prefer at least my P&S Pentax MX-1
