Take a look at the Nikon 85mm f/3.5 DX VR micro lens. It's a DX lens so it's lighter and a little smaller than a full frame macro. It will balance better on your D5500. A full frame macro is going to be really nose heavy on your D5500. It's sharp and has VR. I've used one on my D7000. I was impressed with it.

I did this shot with the Nikon 85mm f/3.5 DX VR micro on my D7000. It's not a macro shot but the lens is great for general photography also.

Oh wow, what a great shot! Thank you so much for your great suggestion! I am leaning that way.

Macro lenses tend to make flowers look unreal. A small bud winds up looking like a giant orchid. Also, the very shallow depth of field will only capture a portion of the flower, leaving everything else blurry. Macro lenses are best suited for objects less than 1/2 inch across and with a relatively flat focal plane like coins or jewelry or small insects.

I see, thank you.

I’ve never used the Nikon but I have the Tamron and I like it. You’re definitely on the right track though. Stay away from short focal length macros.

Thank you!

I would like to start taking close up pictures of flowers. I mean super-close up. I have a Nikon D5500 and would like suggestions on what lens to purchase. I think I need VR and do not want to use a tripod. Manual focusing is fine. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon 100mm or the 90 mm Tamron with VC. Anyone have any good recommendations? Thank you!

I asked about a telephoto lens for Nikon d3400 and seemed like a lot of folks told me not to waste my time. Recommendations were to buy a different camera body but that cost a lot of money and money is tight. What does everyone think about the Nikon 7200? And sigma 150-600

Only one thing to add: with the 7200, if you buy a lens and it turns out the focus is off a little (which happens all the time), the 7200 will allow you to fix it yourself in-camera. With the 3400, there is no capability of fixing a slightly off-focus lens. You'd just have to send the lens back, reorder, and hope the second copy is better - which sometimes it's not! This happened to me, and for that reason, I will never again purchase a camera which doesn't allow the buyer to correct an off-focus lens. I recommend the 7200 with the Tamron 150-600. The images from this combo are tack sharp.

I went there about 6 months ago and was looked at very strangely because they are not set up like retail store. I had some equipment to trade in on a camera that I wanted, but they do not do business that way. I had to leave the equipment with them for evaluation and they sent me a check later. I would not waste the gas for a 2 hour trip to go there. I am just relating my experience. I have the most confidence in KEH and I continue to deal with them solely by Internet or telephone.

Thanks, Jim. I will deal over the internet and save myself a trip through the Atl. traffic!

I live about 30 miles from their location in Symrna, Georgia and have been there a few times to pick up or return goods. They used to be on Marietta street downtown. They do not have a storefront and you need to call and schedule an appointment to either drop off or pick up anything. I have sold to them but did so at an expo they were at. I wish they did have a storefront, but they don't.

Thanks so much. I am so glad I asked before just driving down there with stuff to sell. Appreciate the info!

Basically they have a pick up counter, it is not an actual store. They mainly sell online. The best way to sell equipment is go to one of their buying events.

If you are a couple hours away, another option is Wing's Camera on Briarcliff in Atlanta. They buy and sell but if you are selling you have to put it on consignment.

Thank you. Didn't know it wasn't an actual store. Will look into their next buying event.

I live a couple hours from there and am thinking of making the trip to their real store to sell/buy stuff. Is it worth the drive? Thank you in advance!
