As I mentioned, my Sigmas are IF but do not "rattle". (You call IF "floating element".) But its reassuring that the "rattle" in question is really just "clunk thump". I wouldnt be upset to encounter a "clunk thump" in a somewhat inexpensive lens. OTOH if a lens really truly *rattled*, I would definitely return it.

I just went and shook quite hard my Sigmas and an AFS VR Nikkor. All were silent. All are primes. Then I shook hard a few zooms and did get very slight noises. Maybe their OIS ?

Totally screwed up “Quote Reply”

My Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC (a DX-only lens - pre ART) also has NO rattles or clunks...very solid like a brick. Weighs like one also!

From: https://m.dpreview.com/articles/4606181052/field-test-sigma-dn-lenses

“ When the lenses are loose, or attached to a camera that isn't switched on, they clunk quite alarmingly when tipped upside down, like one of those child's toys that moos and has a cow on the side. I can only assume that is the focusing group sliding back and forth, because as soon as the camera is switched on the group comes under control and, reassuringly, the clunking disappears.”

The Merrill should really show off that lens at its best. Beats me why the IF rattles, cuz Ive got several IF Sigmas that do not rattle, and none are from the premium line up. Does the lens in question rattle even during ordinary casual handling or do you really hafta "shake it to see if anything rattles" like some sort of homebrewed mechanical quality assessment ? Does it truly rattle, or is it only just a gentle soft "clunk thump" sound ?

Ken Rockwell likes to shake test lenses and almost always reports only a slight clicking from the iris blades.

These 3 particular Art/EX lenses all have the floating lens innards that after the camera is turned on, do not rattle- at that point the lens is powered up and that floating element is ready to focus as the camera tells it to.
“Clunk, Thump” is quite accurate!

I have this & the Sigma 60mm f2.8 in SONY FE mount. They all rattle when the camera is not turned on, they are sharp, light weight and low cost, what else could I want. I am very happy with these Sigma lenses.

~ Just my personal opinion here..... I have the 19mm and 60mm ART versions and the 30mm in question here. The rattle is a known fact of the way they are built with a floating element. Also, the sharpness, contrast, and color rendition are something that keep one or more of these lenses a constant on my M43 Oly and Lumix bodies. A look around the Net will show how controversial these lenses are, and why they generally go for less $$.
...Now, I happen to also like longer lenses as my normal - as in a 50mm (a Nikkor S 1.4 at this moment) on my APSc Nikon bodies is normal for me. My 12-24mm zoom rarely sees action.
