It's possible that the file is being sent to OneDrive instead of the local drive, even though you set it to store on local drive. Take a look in OneDrive/Pictures.

Thanks! Great to have something to help me know how the star gazing is at the moment and for the near future.

Any good software that gives moon rise/set times by location ?

Not an app, but a website, check out the Naval Observatory at the following URL for Rise/Set/Transit Times for Major Solar System Bodies and Bright Stars: https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/mrst.php.

Of course, the moon is among the bodies you can get data for, as well as the sun, all the planets, and about 2 dozen bright stars. Gives the azimuth (with 0 being north, 90 east, 180 south and 270 west) for the rise, transit (highest point in the sky) and set.

It allows for setting your location and elevation. Use Form A for US locations, Form B for non-US locations. You can specify for how many days you want the data. I usually print up a month at a time and have the printout near my observation equipment.

This is an invaluable tool for sky observers/photogs.

I want to add one more variable to the discussion.

Someone I know is selling a Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM for $250. Although it's slightly higher than my budget, I will consider it. How does this compare to the EF 100-300mm 4.5-5.6 USM which can be had for $100 or less on eBay? I know it has IS which is superfluous for my main intended applications of night sky/astro, but is IS worth having if I'm going to shoot terrestrial subjects hand-held?

Of course, the sale from the guy I know will be final. On eBay you usually get a short return period.

Discuss.

No need for image stabilization when on tripod (the tripod is the image stabilization)!

Quite frankly I would look for a used Canon EF 100-300mm 4.5-5.6 USM as they are not made anymore but are available on EBay for around $100 or less.

Thanks, fyimo244, for your advice. Looking now on eBay for this lens.

I'd like to get a telephoto lens for my Canon EOS Rebel T6/1300D.

Searching on Amazon, I see a huge range of prices for Canon telephoto lenses. I have $200-300 budget.

One item is Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens Kit with 2X Telephoto Lens, HD Wide Angle Lens and Accessories (8 Pieces) for $199 (Prime).

Another is Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Certified Refurbished) for $78.97

Another is Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras. $78.90 Prime. One of the questions asked if it is Image Stabilized; answer NO.

Do I need Image Stabilization for night sky shooting (long exposures, tripod mounted or Celestron AVX tracking mount). Description includes the following: "Autofocus via front group extension system with DC micromotor." What does this mean?

What other specs should I be looking for?

Thanks for helping me navigate the mysterious path of lens purchase.

I tried many variations of shutter speed and ISO, as well as trying manual and auto-focus. This was taken on 6/30/17 at about 4AM with an 18-55mm lens on Canon T6, auto-focus.

The shot was taken at 18mm, 1/30, f/5.6, ISO at 1600. The only post-processing I used was AutoCorrect in Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

I would appreciate tips on how to get a clearer shot with less graininess.

On August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from the contiguous United States for the first time since 1979. The track of the Moon’s shadow cuts diagonally across the nation from Oregon to South Carolina. Inside the 68-mile-wide path of totality, the Moon will completely cover the Sun as the landscape is plunged into an eerie twilight, and the Sun’s glorious corona is revealed for over 2 minutes. Espenak will present a detailed preview of this exciting event with maps, photos and weather prospects along the eclipse path based on his recent book on the same subject. He will also share some some of his eclipse experiences with us through photos and video. Find out what it’s like to stand in the Moon’s shadow and get ready for 2017.

Interesting info the other day in the EarthSky News on traffic expectations on the day of the solar eclipse, 8/21/17.

Wow! I already had the PDF full manual, but talk about burying something deep in the menu hierarchy! I found it thanks to Richard Taylor, and was able to disable Long Exposure Noise Reduction.

THANKS SO MUCH. I APPRECIATE IT.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. It certainly sounds like this is what is going on here, but ... I was not able to find Long Exposure Noise Removal for the Canon Rebel T6/D1300. I even searched online and I found instructions for Canon cameras, but my model doesn't have this setting.

Anyone know how to disable it on the T6/D1300?
