Here's a couple of pictures I've taken out at the Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Canyon. Taken with the Nikon D700, which by the way is an awesome camera because of its sensor's color rendition. It was one of those times when smoke was in the air from all the fires out in California in 2015. At least something good came out of the smoke.

I've waited hours in the cold at Rocky Mountain National Park for the sun to get down to a low angle, just before blue hour. I've tried to take this shot again recently but traveling with friends sometimes results in them not having patience to wait for that shot. I think their stomachs had other ideas and is more powerful than the brain. I'll try again later when I'm alone.

The Grand Canyon shot was another one of those where I had to wait for the sun to go down. But having a folding chair and a glass of wine made that quite pleasant. Plus the air temperature was quite comfortable.

The last shot was taken just west of Cheyenne Wyoming in the Sherman mountains. Again waiting for the sun to go down and plenty of smoke in the air to give it that effect.

Well done! I have grown up with views of receding mountain ranges. All three of these speak directly to that western sense of place. Nice work. Chris.

I have long been intrigued by the paintings of Z.Z. Wei. He is an artist from China who some time back set up shop in Washington State and began painting his minimal impressions of eastern Washington wheat country. Several times I have taken a stab at copying his painting style in my digital world. Each time I have given up. But this one I did over the last week may be worth sharing with you. While clearly far from perfect, I see it as a step in the right direction. Here I present two versions; the first is just the barn, wheat fields and and poplar trees. In the second I decided to park my Cadillac in front of the barn. In my view it made the whole scene instantly better. This was all done in Adobe Photoshop starting with a blank file. What are your thoughts? Chris

I just found this and I'm happy I did! I like Wei's work very much and I like your take very much. The gambrel roofed barn and way you rendered trees are strong references but more importantly you have captured the spirit of the way Wei showed us the world. I enjoyed the way Wei used vehicles. His fore-and-aft view of cars and trucks put them firmly into the scene. I'm ok with that big red machine, it is the most beautiful thing that ever came out of a GM plant! This is very cool work saxman, thanks for the Wei reminder.

What perspective!!! Great view here, great eye!!!

Thank you, Veronica! This was kind of an oddball post but the image does sum up very pleasant encounters with the red rock country. Do you know Dixon's work?

No, no, nooo, not going in there.....not doing it ....nope, nope! I will never go back there, And beside, I am sure I left nothing in there.

Just noticed NJFranks post, that makes two good decisions.

Long time reader, first time posting. Wintertime, culling old photos, found this one from a few years ago on a winter trip through Texas. I almost never use a sepia tone, but somehow think it works here.

The toning works well here Dan. This is an engaging image; I look forward to seeing more.

I wasn't familiar with the artist, so did a two-minute overview on Google. Your strong composition is very engaging, and it seems you've muted the colors to emulate Mr. Dixon's style.

Great to know you're expanding your processing interests, Phil!

Thank you, Linda. I hope I was not too esoteric with this reference; I do love his work. His use of color in related but semi-isolated blocks was what I was going for here. His colors were bold but even more muted. His work is among the best at illustrating the fundamentally arid aspect of the west. And he was married to Dorothea Lange for a time and that must have been interesting! I have been reading more about the impact of the WPA arts projects in the west, some good works were done.

Arches NP. May, 2009. Dixon is one of my favorite western landscape painters and he was married to one of my favorite photographers.
