Thanks for the response. I am going to keep my eyes open. I did get to try one at the biginning of Dec. It was nice, but needed more time with it. Maybe I will be as lucky as you were finding one at a great deal.

Good luck with it, you will definitely be pleased.

I have been trying to decide if I want to spend the money for a canon 100-400 lens. This past summer I spent many hrs watching and taking pictures of some Osprey Birds. Just don't know if I can justify the cost of a lens.

I understand. I fought it and fought it. I considered the Sigma 150-500 and read everything I could on that one. Being that I would likely have to buy it off ebay, I was concerned with how well it would work with my canon 60d - and I know that many have wonderful results with it. I just felt that if I could hold out and get the canon lens, then there would be no question of how well it worked. And, I was worried a bit about spending that kind of money on ebay and potentially lose out.
When I saw this one on craigslist, I must have responded within minutes of her posting it. The price was several hundred below what seems to be the average price on ebay, and she told me she bought it in 2012. Our emails back and forth and her giving me her cellphone number first along with other info helped me feel good about it. Face to face, in a public place, and then the date code put it at May of 2012, I got really lucky for sure.

Check your white balance.

Thanks for the check. As I think about it, I think I had the camera set on something else. In PP, I had to play with white balance quite a bit...still trying to improve that editing stuff.

I love the lens, my 100-400L is my carry lens. Tack sharp at 400mm!

I think I'm gonna love this one too...not nearly as heavy as I was thinking. May become a carry for me as well!

Thank you all for the comments! Can't wait to get to the beach this spring. Maybe down to the river sooner if I can get away a bit.
Canikon, thanks for that catch...I hadn't even noticed that spot, I'll check that out, along with that f8 sweet spot!

I've been watching that ebay site for a lens...and wouldn't you know it, just the other day, I was able to pick one up from Craigslist - a Canon 100-400L! The code date showed May of 2012! Got a great deal from a gal that realized she wanted to get away from the long reach and focus on portraits more.
Here's my test shots zoomed out to 400 on my Canon 60d, all handheld at ISO 400.
Still learning and thankful for your knowledge!

Cropped just a bit...

Beautiful! Just a few weeks ago, there was a story about a snowy owl that had been hanging out on the Outerbanks, North Carolina...somewhere down near the Hatteras Lighthouse. Article talked about all sorts of big name photographers down there trying to get the money shot with the owl on the beach and the lighthouse in the background.

Yup, it's there! Keep playing with it. I've been able to shoot a really long exposure and have it as one long streak across the sky. It's a great subject to practice on and play with...have fun!
Are you on the ISS email list where they notify you as to time and direction of flyover?

Others are giving you advice on printers, but prior to printing is exposure and how it prints. I had occasion to photo graph dark skinned individuals I goggled and found a number of good suggestions. For an "albino gringo" like me, getting correct exposure for photographing was a challenge.

I found many charts of skin tones... goggle "skin tone chart" this may help you with setting up a good exposure chart. Or if you have suggestions, surly sharing experience of how to properly expose and light would a great help.

Enjoy your trip and continue with good works. d/p

Thank you so much for that! I was wondering a bit about that too...still so much to learn, but have a great time at it! Thanks again!

This is not a "film" printer by any means. It is a dye sublimation ink printer that laminates a clear cover over the thermally transferred ink print.
Yes its a good little printer for the money but it is limited to the 4.6 size only. You buy Ink/Paper packs for them that yield about 100 prints, the ink always runs out a little before the paper is gone, but they put 108 sheets of 4x6 paper in the packs. About 38 cents per print on average.

Thanks both of you for the info...I'll check into this also!

The HP100 works on battery and prints wirelessly. Not bad quality either for photos, but the ink isn't the cheapest. Great portability though, I love mine, I graduated from the old Deskjet 450 model when it finally died after 11 years of travels with the government.

Thanks, MTShooter! I'll have a look at that.
