Took this on an overcast day. Thought it would make an interesting shot. Worried the house would fall down while I was taking the shot.

Thought it would make a better picture. Never found just the right angle to shoot it. Any ideas?

Your first picture is Great! To me anyway. I have been bouncing between HDR and some effects I can add in Lightroom. I took your first picture and manipulated it in Lightroom. Has a different results but like it equally as well. Could not make the clouds in Lightroom with as much contrast as yours. I tried this to see if Lightroom would get the halo effect as well. Lightroom did try to add the halo around the trees as well. I think it has to do with the way the sun is coming through from the back. Could have had different results using your original Raw file. Thanks for posting.

You are correct although in this shot I was looking for the high contrast effect. We had a hard time keeping the dog still long enough to shoot. We only had 3 shots before he would have no more.
Thanks for the comment.

I am new to Uglyhedgehog and hope I am posting this in the correct area.

I saw something months ago on youtube to get a background shot for my iPhone. It was raining outside and wanted something to do.

I went to Home Depot and got 5 pieces of PVC pipe and made a frame to hold a black blanket. Put a T in the middle of the top section and added one leg to the T so it would lean back. I didn't glue any pieces together so I could store it out of the way. I started out using my flash off camera. Almost worked but I had a strobe so used it instead and placed it on the chair with an umbrella, you will see in the attached picture. Did this during the day but close my blinds.

Camera and settings: Nikon D600 - Nikon 24-120mm f/4VR - lens out at 120mm for shot. ISO 640 - f/16 shot at 1/200 Sec - I think the strobe was set at half power. If I didn't have the strobe I think I could have done it with my off camera flash. Camera was set on manual.

My idea was to get the dog with a black background to use on my iPhone to see the icons clearly. The only post processing was in Photoshop to add black to canvas size to have full background in black and the dog in the correct position. This took a bit of trial and error. The final picture for the phone is Great, and on the phone is Great but the attached picture of the phone sucks, didn't use any effort to shoot that one it's just for demonstration.

I hope I put this in the correct area. Hope others post similar projects, always looking for a project. Always fun when you have a goal in mind. I will post other projects I have done in this same area if it is the correct area. Jim

Jerry, I think as others said you were in Shutter priority. I understand you were sure it was in A position for aperture priory. One time while shooting my D600 I found that I was not locked into the A slot on the camera. Still took pictures but not as I was hoping for. This might have happened.
If you have Photoshop, open the picture, under File you will see File Info. At that point look under Camera Info and in the Exposure area you will see how the camera was set on both pictures. Aperture or Shutter.
Having said that the reason I think the camera changed between shots is the light coming in from the window. Something changed the amount coming through. On the first picture look at the drapes. Looks good. On second picture the drapes are more blown out. More light. I think quite a bit of additional light because as you said the aperture changed to f/5.6 allowing less light to enter the camera. If less light is entering the camera and the drapes are now blown out it indicates to me light coming in through the window is changing. At f/5.6 if light was not changing the drapes would have even more detail.
This is my view of the problem.

I am new to The Hedgehog and was wondering how others say they got information of all you setting. I got some but not the Aperture or Sutter setting on the camera. Am I downloading pictures incorrectly? I have a Mac.

Thank you for all the comments. Was surprised with all the reactions. This was another version taken at the same time but removing most of the texture and vignetting.

Also I have been checking the box store original, should I be?

Yes it was. I'm in a Corvette club and we had all our cars out close to the airplanes. Once a month they have a fly in and we were there that day. Took several shots that day and this is my favorite one. Looks much better full size. I will attach it.

Attached is th revised picture. If you don't want as much texture you would not take the highlight down so far.

This is taking highights down -100 and white up +48

I downloaded your picture to see what would happen in Photoshop. I took the highlight to -100 and the brightness +48.
This might not be for everyone but I like the photo better. It starts to create shadows and my mind doesn't say squint when looking at it. You can use the same setting in Lightroom if you have it.

Been reading Ugly Hedgehog some time now. Lots of great information. I have been shooting for a long time but decided to start taking time and shoting better when I retired last year. I'm fond of the Nikon line of cameras. My newest is the D750. I have seen a big improvement with the new sensor. Started with D80, D7000, D600, with oil problems, and now have the D750. Favorate walk around lense is the Nikon 24-120mm f/4.
Picture attached is one I shot 2 weeks ago. Pros and cons about the texture on the wall. I just couldn't get back far enough from the wall to boken the background. I liked the picture so much I had a 21 x 16 printed on glass. Family loves it.
