Remember when almost all photographic equipment came with nice leather cases? My first "good" camera was an Agfa, with a case. Then I got a couple of Mirandas and a Nikon F. I had a Minox C, and the camera and all the accessories had little leather cases.

The nice thing about the case, aside from the protection, was that you could remove the front and leave the basic case attached. The camera would be protected on four sides, would have a neck strap, and was ready to shoot.

Even accessory lenses came with nice cases. Now we get a plastic bag with suffocating warnings in ten different languages.

I remember, usually used the never ready just that way, bottom no front, had to, nearly wore through the strap lugs on the cameras, Bought an optec never ready to protect my DSLR when I'm carrying it in a backpack or other bag, Bob.

I'd test the camera, possible that it's defective, table top tripod is a handy accessory for a small point and shoot, I carry one, doing the test hang newspaper on the wall, shoot at a 45deg angle to the wall, focus on the center fold line, a black marker line maybe needed for a focusing aid, should help with point of focus and depth of field for what ever F stop you use. I am looking for a light weight wheeled hand truck to carry my camera and bag, which is a Tamrac Pro 12.
I have arthritis in my right hip and try to avoid to carry heavy bags.
My interest goes especially to one that can be split in two part, because the Tamrac Pro 12 has on the back site a 8.5 inch wide sleeve to add such a hand truck.
Any practical experience and recommendation is highly appreciated.

Sounds like what you need is a luggage cart since you already have the bag, a wheeled back pack would also work, BTW did that a while myself when I had a sore back and was taking a computer back and forth to work, Bob.

Isn't the Canon 28-135mm lens their standard kit lens?

I own one and I find it be a very good lens.

It is adequate lens, only fair. Kit lens are the cheapest lens Canon, Nikon offer with the camera which is priced to be attractive. IMHO a potential buyer is well advised to purchase the body only and purchase a better lens with the difference in $$.

I agree. Buy the body only, then add lenses. The original poster didn't say she was on a budget.

Sorry guys, I have to disagree, even with a price no object view at the discount for a body only the kit lens is a deal, if only s a backup, I considered the problem many times, get the kit lens. B ob.

What was the secret to keeping pictures from sticking to those plates?

Damn, I'll be crazy the rest of the day trying to think what they called those, chrome-like metal plates. You put your "glossy" prints face down on the metal and layed absorbant sheets on them and placed stacks of them in a dryer that forced hot air through them. Can not think what that metal was called...it'll pop into my head while driving down the interstate.......

Pentax makes excellent cameras as well. The K-5 scores just as well or even better than Nikon and Canon in that range. Also, Pentax has the image stabilization and focus motor in the camera body, while Canon and Nikon build those functions into the lens. That means you pay for IS and AF with every Canikon lens you buy, while with Pentax you're only paying for them when you buy the body. It also means that you can use older Pentax film lenses with new Pentax bodies, because they have used the same K-mount or compatible version of it for the last 30+ years. I believe the Pentax is also a little smaller and lighter than the comparable Canikon models. I'd love to get a K-5, but it's out of my budget right now. I will be picking up a K-r this month.

If cost really is no concern, Pentax also makes the 645D, a 40MB CCD medium format camera that retails for a little under $10K.

True Pentax has more available lenses considering in body IS and legacy lenses, however in body IS is not lens specific as Canon and Nikon and at least in theory less effective, last Pentax I held (back 2 years ago) was heavier, visit a good camera store, try the fit and feel in your hands, Nikons have always felt clumsy to me, some Canons too, my son and I have Canons, my daughter has a Nikon, if my camera is near it's mine she grabs not her own, just doesen't fit as well, when you do your fit test also have a 70mm-80mm lens on it as you mention portraits.

Yes ! Absolutely true. The power that is used to download photos directly from your camera will drain the camera battery each and every time. The memory card is a much more efficient way to do this.

That said I do wish the Tech folks would invent a very long lasting battery that operates on say... air. That would be nice. Maybe a bit unrealistic but still nice for us.

I always carry a battery recharger and extra already charged batteries with me when ever I go out. I am now looking for a battery charger that I can plug into my car ( similar to a cell phone car charger). Has anyone ever seen one?

What about a $20.00 inverter, plugs in the lighter and gives 110 ac, then you can use your regular charger, Bob

Marisa, your not to far from Manhattan, take your camera to B&H or Adorama and try the lens on it, see how it feels, Bob.
