Balance and ease of handling is no less important.

Actually once you try it I think you may like it in certain situations... I have an older Bogen 3018 which I attach a Slik pistol grip ball head with Arca quick release. Left hand controls camera with pistol grip and right hand operates controls... NO limitations on angle of pod or terrain. VERY quick if you are following something. A couple velcro straps with buckles kept wrapped around monopod allows attaching to fence rail, post, etc... for duty as a more stable mount if needed. I cannot overemphasize how well this ballhead works on a monopod.

If I’m using a monopod it’s with a long lens, usually a zoom, so my left hand will be under the lens on the zoom ring. 98% of the time I shoot handheld. When I don’t I can use the monogimbal and it keeps the camera and long lens balanced and easy to use. A monopod is no substitute for a tripod. A monopod is just for support. A tripod is for stability. As for strapping to a tree or sign or fence post, I have a Platypod for that.

Attached are: in-camera jpeg, RAW, and one post processed. All saved to ca. 10mp file size.
I hope I've done this correctly.

Well you’re not gonna see much difference if you don’t do much to process it.

Oops, way too late to clarify that the SX50 was made by Canon.

I've never shot exclusively jpg with my Olympus, except for one online challenge having to do with camera features. That was a painful week

I know. I was just saying that Olympus does superior JPEG’s I can still do better shooting raw and editing.

Trying to edit raw from a bridge camera back in 2014 - 2016, I could not achieve the quality of my in-camera SX50 jpg's of small subjects shot at great distances.

These days I shoot and edit raw only (with an Olympus), often in challenging lighting conditions but usually large subjects much closer than a baby eagle in a nest across the river. My results are far superior to the occasional jpg I might compare.

DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU

Yep, Olympus JPEG’s are better than the others but I can still do better with raw.

As someone once told me, when I showed them the Pergear TH3 Pro Ball Head that I was using with my monopod, "Aren't you defeating the whole purpose of using a monopod in the first place? If you're going that far, just use a tripod."

Yep, I don’t get using a ball head on a monopod.

I second the suggestion for the Wimberly monogimbal but it alone is more than the $100 you want to stay under.

My experience as well and it works 100% of the time. The problem is these signs are hardly ever used by road crews. I've only seen them used twice in my entire life, and they worked perfect. I suspect those that don't think they worked never experienced them and constantly end up on the wrong end of the "free for all".

There really shouldn’t be need for a sign. It should be taught as part of learning to drive.

Now that I no longer have any F mount or ASP-C cameras I really need to sell that Tamron 18-400

I have an 18-300mm on my D3400 that sits by the kitchen window. That’s not my main camera, and I give up a little bit on image quality (easily fixed with software), but the extreme flexibility of that lens is fun and adds quite a bit to my enjoyment of photography. I have a 100-400 for my Nikon Z7-2, in addition to the 24-200, but have ordered the Z 18-400mm for the same reason: flexibility and creative power.

I’m pretty sure they don’t make the 18-400 in a Z mount, and if they did it would be a crop-sensor lens.

Not really what happens at all. Without a designated merge point it is a free for all. At the designated merge point people tend act rationally and take turns. At least that's what happens in my experience.

I’ve never seen a “designated” merge point. There’s a natural merge point just before the lane closes. There will always be those that try to screw things up by getting over early, but if most just wait to merge it’ll work out.

Here’s what I did: Purchased the Z8 and the adapter. Then I tried my variety of lens: 24-70, 70-200, 105, 18-400. All worked great with the adapter except the Tamron 18-400. I forget the technical reason but that convinced me to get the 28-400, which I will use a lot for grandkids sports. I’m really happy with the camera and my selection of lenses.

Well the 18-400 is a DX lens and will only work in crop mode on the Z8.

Yes, everyone should continue to use the left lane until the last minute.
Then try to squeeze in.

ONCE I saw a "Left Lane Closed 1 Mile" sign on an interstate. ODDLY, everyone started merging at THAT sigh. By the time we got to the actual closure, there was NO BACKUP. Traffic was running at normal speed.
ONCE!

It's PEOPLE, not the signs that cause the problem.........

That only happens if traffic is light.

Amazing how simple that is, eh?

Not the most efficient method. Better to stay in your lane until the merge. Especially if you’re gonna get pissed of at the people doing it right and do stupid stuff like block the lane.
