Good time of year to go - we went 2 years ago in May. Try to get to the North end also. less people and beautiful. Its all beauiful!! I have hundreds of pictures but no sunset or sunrise. Try to get those. I am still learning about photography, and for that trip had just bought my new camera and knew nothing about exposures or how to set the camera. All of my Grand Canyon pictures were done on automatic. I did take a couple pictures on Manuel and they were way over exposed, so i did not want to miss having a good picture so i just used automatic. I want to go back and use manuel and see some sunsets. Probably will never happen ,cuz im getting old, in my 70's and on limited income so will probably go local most of the time now. I loved the west as i had never seen it or the mountains. We drove there from Colorado along I 70 thru the Rocky MOuntains. Absolutely beautiful. I didnt nap in the car so I could see the mountains! Hubby said I never stopped smiling. Make sure you stay hydrated. I had a little trouble with the altitude esp.at the North end with elevation over 10000 feet. I live in the east with elevation less than 2000 feet. Big difference and noticeable. Have fun

ok, I will try using different f stops. Keep in mind that I am a novice just learning and dont have an exposure meter and I have no clue what HDR is I am in my 70's and just learning my new hobby. I noticed the drops of dew in the plants and tried taking a picture of it, getting as closes as I could. I was using a sigma 18 - 300 mm lens. I also have a 135 mm lens and a 50mm prime lens. My camera is a Cannon T5i But I am learning little by little how to use it in Manuel. Thank you so much for the quick reply and the info. I will try the bracketing. :-)

When i was "hiking" thru the yard stalking birds I noticed this - my Lupine is starting to come up and there were drops of water in the little space in the center , so i thought it would make an interesting picture.

Good Morning, I was out and about trying to "catch birds" as this is a new hobby for me I have a lot to learn. I am getting old and want to do as much as possible with my new hobby. I am loving it.
I was stalking chickadee and found this Nuthatch hiding among the leaves, so I "caught it also" i cant go hiking or mountain climbing so my yard is my destination. But i am having fun , the Chickadee was trying to hide from me.

that is correct - cateract surgery does not correct glaucoma - there are eye drops medication for that and once glaucoma symptoms come, they cannot be reversed. Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure and does not affect the lens at all. Totally different. My eye doctor was watching me for glaucoma as my pressures were up and I freaked out - but he explained that he would watch the pressure carefully and that it is easily treated with drops. It is no big deal if caught early. But cannot be corrected once symptoms start. But it has been ok, no further increase for me but keeping an eye on it. I did have cateract surgery and it is no big deal.. they can put a lens in that help that you do not to have to use glasses for reading, but those cost $3000 more per lens that insurance did not cover - so I decided wearing glasses to read was no big deal. I no longer wear glasses even for driving but do need them for reading. I dont need them at all to look thru the eye piece of my camera. I am happy!

the train ride should be beautiful. i would love to go on the train across the west. My hubby was a conductor for the NS and Conrial in Pa. Wish we would have had time to ride the train. WE saw it though.

Hubby and I went to the GC two years ago in the middle of May. I had never seen it and wanted to see it before I died (IM 70, but in good health now) I loved it and all I could say mostly was "wow" The crowds were not bad at all and the weather was great, some beautiful clouds during the day, and we drove to the north end (about 300 miles) and spent the day. The North was more beautiful and much less crowded. I did not get any sunrise or sunset pics though. But got many, many beautiful shots IMO. I had a new camera - a Canon T5i which I took most (well all) pictures on automatic as I did not know how to expose on my own. I have learned a lot about it in the past 2 years. :-)

Betsy, welcome to the Hog!
This may not be for you and I don't know what other lenses you may already have but another way to do Macro photography on the cheap is to get a set of extension tubes. Tubes can help you fill your frame but you DO lose infinity focus that's not needed while shooting macro.
There are inexpensive manual tubes and more expensive EOS tubes that have full Auto focus and camera functions while in use. Just an Idea to consider!

Thanks SharShooter for the info. I will concider extension tubes. Probably most of my flower pictures are close ups not really macro. So a good close up is ok with me. I just want to take good pictures.

My understanding is lens stabilization is only helpful when using slow shutter speeds. Is this true or false?

Why?
