I have two batteries. I use one battery..... period. The second battery I charge once a month. I don't want to have to replace both batteries at the same time. The way I heard batteries work is the amount of time on the charger relates to their lifespans.

darktable. it is free. it is powerful. you really only need to use a few of its modules:
- lens correction
- base curve -> fusion
- white balance
- perspective correction
- crop and rotate image
- spot removal
- shadows and hilights (start with just turning on) (radius)(3D)
- contrast brig...ss saturation
- color zones
- local contrast = sharpen image (detail) (3D)
- defringe
- denoise (profiled) (must do)

Why does GIMP have an "extensive learning curve"? I want to do some simple things like remove wires from a pic or enhance clouds without darkening the scene, perhaps print only a portion of a scene.

I recommend using darktable for that. It is so easy I can't even remember how to use Gimp for that.
There are only a few modules I've found I use:
- lens correction
- base curve -> fusion
- white balance
- perspective correction (does the same thing as the next module)
- crop and rotate image
- spot removal (use this to edit out the wire)
- shadows and hilights (start with just turning on) (radius)(3D)
- contrast brig...ss saturation
- color zones
- local contrast = sharpen image (detail) (3D)
- defringe
- denoise (profiled) (must do)

After looking at the flower shot your dof looks too shallow, unless that's your intention.

It was. I couldn't find anything in focus in the flower pic though... or am I mistaken?

Pole shots sound good. What does one need to get to do that? How does on release the shutter or see the photo he is taking?

Thank you so much for thinking so Andy.

What do you mean?

As for the level plane you mean looking straight (no x/y offset).
