Architect1776 has a great analogy with the firearms.

My question: Have you taken your grandson on a "photographic outing"?

You might take him out with a P&S and your easiest DSLR and let him take pictures with both. Take some of the same picture with both so he can see the comparison. Turn him loose with first one and then the other. Compare shots while you are out and also after you come home and can review them on a computer screen.

Oh, and be sure to go someplace interesting like a zoo.

After that both you and he should have a better idea what he would like and would use.

And to Architect1776: I too dislike shooting 44 Mag, but 44 Specials in a big Ruger are fun.

Welcome aboard! Tell us about the biker stuff.

My wife and I have ridden bicycles since 1988. Completed 3 century (100 miles) rides and many metric century (62 miles) rides. Now 40 miles is a good ride on a bicycle. We just came back from Dublin, OH where we rode in the Midwest Tandem Rally.

Now on the motorcycle (2008 Goldwing), 40 miles is just getting started. After riding some smaller bikes, I worked my way up to the Wing when I retired in 2012. Two friends and I completed a ride out west in 2015. 4,300 miles in 13 days. Rode from Kansas City to Wyoming and back. MO, NE, SD, MT, WY, CO, KS and home to Missouri.

So I guess I have dual citizenship claim to the "biker" title.

Thanks for asking and thanks to all for the welcome messages.

I probably use Notes more than any other app. It has become my to do list, grocery list, inventories of supplies, and keeper of seldom used information (cartridge numbers for printers, hotel membership numbers, etc.). Occasionally, I use it as a phone, too.

Just joined and thought I would give you a little background.

Bought my first camera, an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic, in Japan in 1968. I shot mostly sight seeing slides while overseas. Not artistically inclined but working on it.

Bought a Nikon D3100 a few years ago, and I have a couple of Canon point and shoots.
I shoot mostly animals at the zoos I visit and some still life flowers that I use for wallpapers on my computer.

Been shooting RAW + JPEG. Haven't ventured into post processing yet but I hope to soon. Been shooting in program mode mostly, but picking some useful on the digest here.

Thanks for all the insights
