It's a psychological visual thing because of the way the human eye-brain connection works, spatial perception..... Centering vertically can just make something LOOK off-center toward the bottom. This phenomenon is observable everywhere. Learned this many years ago regarding printed page layout, hanging things on a wall, matting, whatever.

I don't know if there is a precise ratio between top and bottom to use though.

This is what I was taught. The real old timers used 5” for bottom; 3 for sides and 4 for top (might have 3 & 4 reversed).

Like someone said it’s all a matter of taste.

I have a what was sold as a gaming laptop about 7-8 years ago. I have replaced hard drive with a solid state device. You will need auxiliary /backup hard drives. I backup old stuff to DVD and current stuff is kept on hard drive and backup. Lots of folks backup on web.
The power of a laptop comes from the graphics, mine uses an nvidia card; and from the processor, buy the fastest you can afford, IMO. I have a core i7.
My laptop processes the most current software (in this case ON1) with no effort. I run an aux screen at home and laptop screen when traveling.

I took only my 12-40 on my Olympus OM-D. Never wished I had another lens to tote around. A tripod would have been nice, but way outside logistics.

Don't forget, you will be walking a lot. You don't want to burden yourself with extras.

I got a lot of good shots and some great shots on the dozen or so stops we made. The things you want to photograph mainly will be in small areas, streets built before cars, so a wider angle will be mostly appropriate. A fast lens is a necessity, IMO.

Teach exposure triangle and basics first. I have taught teenagers and unless your student knows how to take a picture, composition etal is useless. Student should learn camera controls as part of basics and exposure triangle.

Hi I am here in the UK. I have been a professional photographer for nearly 40 years. Starting off in weddings, portraits, social, studio etc. & the last 10 years as an architectural, interiors, property & landscape photographer.

Something I notice regularly is how we in the UK & US view images differently? This is not a criticism, but an observation!

When I started out using medium format film cameras (Hassleblad & Rollei) for weddings etc. I used to study photographs from other photographers from around the world & soon noticed how we see things differently? Weddings, portraits from the US tended to have over filled-in flash (in my opinion & to my bosses & contemporaries & clients here) compared to UK images.
Now in the digital era I'm seeing images from the US in particular over Photoshopped (again in my opinion. We have some proponents of it here too. As we have adopted some US spellings into our language thanks to computers mainly. Though I have to say I resist using them in the interests of preserving the English language, as it is meant to be here).
They are some great images, particularly of landscapes & wildlife, especially on this site Uglyhedgehog, but to my eye they look unnatural? False colours, too much contrast & saturation, along with definition & over-sharpening?

Anyone shed any light on this? No pun intended!

I rarely comment on pictures posted here because so many of them are art renditions of a real scene, losing the meaning of photography, IMO. I do some changes in post processing, but try real hard not to let the picture look unnatural. I see the same thing in photos posted in our local camera club. Scenes I am very familiar with don't look real.
I don't have a clue why, just glad to know that others might feel the same way. Not about to try and solve something about taste. I will just avoid posting pictures, it's easier that way. I don't really care if anyone likes the photos I take, it's just taste.
Have a great week.

I was a consultant during the y2k scare (mostly media). All the systems we worked had required full dates, 2/2/4 characters. There was no lazy way. I suspect the current bug is limited to low end stuff (as pointed out).

My wife retired one year after I did. I retired at 69 and it's been very busy since, with travel and activities around house/town. I have to pick a day to take it easy, only reason I saw this posting is today is "lazy" day. I am limiting my activities today until late afternoon then we are going out to dinner and a basketball game. Getting ready to build a house, life is full.

I got a lot of good pics at the aquarium in ATL. Careful of reflections, take pics at slight angle if necessary. Best pics I took were of jellyfish, blue lights made a great photo, now on metal.
I used my Olympus 1.4, 17 as I remember.

Lived about 15 mins drive from Billsburg for a while; worked about 5 mins away. Sunday afternoons often found us on bikes riding around historic area.
I do not have a single pic from that time. Great place.

ON1 offers a 30 day trial at no charge.

I have used ON1 for some time. I am a minimalist editor so ON1 does everything and more than I need. I think it's easy to use, but that's for you to decide.

Fed ex lost two parts to my home hvac; discovered inside their facility by my hvac technician, a week late. UPS had 5 tries for delivery after 15th and only got one correct; 2 lost despite having status of delivered, 1 delivered as stated, 1 lost for a day and one 2 days after status was delivered.

Moral, don’t ship around holidays.

Very nice. Might also look nice shot from a longer distance. Love old buildings.

I shoot with the same camera. I can reliably get good handheld pics at 1/40, if the subject is still.

Lots of good advice on here. To take full advantage of your camera, stop using auto. I shoot all manual; fairly easy since I started photography in the film age with manual camera.

When I take my camera with me, I always set everything up for what I think will be appropriate. Take a test shot, then adjust.

Good luck.
