The more I see with Winblows, the more it makes me glad I switched to Linux years ago, then switched finally to Mac.

Never better... zero malware, zero virus worries, can't ask for more stability... FREE OS upgrades..... FAST processing.... yep... great system. No patch Tuesday 39 updates every month..... multiple reboots.... no thanks....

My hat's off to you. You are not alone as this is not an uncommon approach; indeed, it is reasoned.
But when most of the country runs on 120-volt, a 277-volt OS is going to be a comparatively lonely road that may be more challenging than most folks care to travel.....

My favorite software to use is Photoshop Elements (11). But I also use Paint Shop Pro X5. I really feel there is not much difference in these two products but sometimes it one program will offer tools the other doesn't.

I also use a few of the Topaz products such as Topaz Detail, Topaz Adjust, Topaz Clean, Topaz B&W Effects, Topaz Re-Mask, and Topaz DeNoise and Topaz Simplify. (so far. I am in the process of purchasing a few more Topaz products as they go on sale).

I think I might be a software Junkie.

Topaz is quite a gem for a software junkie.
And all of those Tpoaz software tools can be integrated into one gateway - Lightroom 5. That integration will really get you excited.

I have always been an Intel fan myself.
Vista I never used. I did come from XP to Windoze 8 when my last build died after 10 years of nearly non-stop running. But the last time it was shut down, it slowly capsized.
So I just bought a ready-to-run tower with the spec's I liked. Kind of a plug and play. I plugged in my displays, wireless mouse, and wireless keyboard and let the party begin.
I hated the start screen. I thought MS rolled over and made an Apple.
But I found the desktop and began building my familiar layout.
So far I'm happy with the Box-O-Rocks.
We all have to progress at some point. I don't own my first car anymore either. ;)

The fact that most major companies with technical uses and legacy software have not done much more than kick the tires on Win8 speaks volumes.

While the underlying use of memory in Win 8.1 is a quantum leap forward (translating into response times), the smart phone gimmicky touchy-feeling mood-laden interface can be infuriating when you need to get something done.

Win Pro 7 is stable, consistent, and requires no additional training to be productive.
Companies and organizations who make money want the tools to work efficiently, not slow things down while users play around trying to get things to work, requiring more support, and ultimately never realize any corresponding increase in employee productivity. It is a hollow investment with no tangible ROI.

Most Win 8 platforms have been pawned off on retails sales, telephone & online support, and surprise, surprise, … state and federal governments.

It used to be called the bleeding edge of technology for a reason.
With Win 8.0 has become the bleating edge.

I'll wait until all the sheep are sheared and continue to buy optimized off the shelf Win 7 Pro boxes and laptops for now. (And yes, I’m ignoring the learning curve from the generation of smart phone users and their ability to adapt to a Win 8 platform with a 24” screen or a windows 8 smart phone.)

Why? Because Windows 8 is NOT an upgrade from Win 7 Pro. It is a branch targeted towards a new generation of user.

Win 7 has continued support, development and , well, how far off can Win 9 be anyway?
The MS cycle of life and death continues.

Funnily, I got interrupted while ordering the Tamron, then saw this post. Serendipitous! Waiting now, although the extra weight is a major consideration for me. I want to see a comparison of the quality of the two lenses and, of course, the price difference.
I share your concern over the weight. 2 pounds is a lot!
I'm hoping that the initial numbers reported reflect a shipping weight w case and packaging versus the just the lens.
I'm sure we will know soon.
And a timely test by DXOMark might cinch our decision.

JerryC41 posted this link this morning to a good video that's been floating around on uhh for a few days now. There's a lot of good knowledge in it. There might be something in it that interests you: http://www.slrlounge.com/canon-vs-nikon-tony-northrup/
A video well worth watching. Advice is honest and fair. Thanks!
My only quibble is the focus on megapixels while ignoring pixel quality. Pixel generation is easy (witness any current generation smart phone), but pixel quality is equally if not more important.
Not convinced? Take a look at the top of the line professional Canon 1Dx (18MP) and Nikon D4 (16MP) each costing over $6,000 for just the body.
Having a zillion pixels is not worthwhile if pixel quality is not there.

Hey Bob, you have all the gear, so import to LR each day. But tag the images on import with key words. It is so easy to do and it one of LR's strengths.

If you can resist the urge to view what you have taken, then while in LR, also rate them as you go.

There is nothing wrong with deleting the dogs and obvious culls as you go, Just be sure to ONLY DELETE OR MOVE FILES FROM WITHIN LIGHTROOM.

And while there, you can even regale your shipmates with a simple slide show of the highlights you captured from the previous day(s), also using LR and your tagged top rated images.

I lived in Panama for many years and know the old canal quite well. It remains an amazing feat of engineering.
Meanwhile, the new canal just along side is nearing completion. That is also an amazing project. I receive weekly and monthly progress updates along with photographs.

Before I start I'm going to apologise for revisiting this topic but I really can't find a lens that fits what I need.
Some will have heard me whining about the poor focusing of the Canon 6D. Best advice to whiners is shut up and do something - so I have - I sold it today, with the EF 24-105 L it came with. Now to replace it
My want list :
1) Rapid to acquire focus and take the image.
2) At least 6 fps rapid shooting.
3) Good high ISO performance
4) Well built and weather resistant.
5) Handling I like.
Canon are supposed to be releasing a new 7D Mkll at Photokina and the spec list that it is expected to have, meets my needs. http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/08/are-these-the-eos-7d-mark-ii-specifications/
Now the problem. I need a high quality walk around lens that has stabilisation and weather sealing. My preferred zoom range will be from 18-24 up to 80-130. An aperture of f4 or thereabouts is fine, I'm not particularly interested in f 2.8 for weight and cost reasons.
Ideally I would like something that is sharper and slightly wider than the EF 24-105 L and I've spent a lot of time looking but I can't see anything from any manufacturer that comes any closer to my wish list.
Note I do want weather sealing as I live in a dusty environment and this appears to eliminate Tamron and Sigma from my consideration.
I'm open to at least considering other makes although that would mean replacing my greatly loved EF 70-200 L f4 is and it might be hard to afford a new body and 2 new L class lenses all at one go.
There probably isn't a solution but if anyone can think of one I'd love to hear it.
Please no brand sniping. I have no axe to bear in this regard.

Did you ever calibrate and micro adjust the camera and lens?
(Your experience is not typical, especially with the popular 24-105mm L.)

It will be interesting to see what their price will be.

And the race is on!
More important than the price is the performance.

After just renting and testing the Tamron this week, I may delay my order to buy one and wait to see how the Sigma performs.

I'd guess it will probably be about $600 more than Tamron (IMHO) to keep Sigma in that more professional segment of the market while garnering initial market share.
Tamron set the price/performance bar high for the "advanced enthusiast." Sigma has to up the ante.

From initial specs it weighs 2 pounds heaver! Therefore it should be a more rugged build.
And at 2,860 grams (6.3lbs) versus Tamron's 1,951 grams (4.3lbs) it should be!

There is a "cheap" way to control a Canon DSLR via WiFi that can get you started without making a big investment.

LightRoom in conjunction with PS 2014. Pretty simple because the combination is the best photographic post processing software in the world. That is pretty much an established fact. However, people have their personal favorites for whatever reasons and I wouldn't argue with them. Many people look for magic software and that might mean cropping and adjusting exposure to some degree. Who knows. Some people just don't like the Adobe corporation and the way they do business. I'm a software junkie and I have just about everything ever made. Nik is different because it doesn't try to emulate Adobe and the others do.

Lightroom is the defacto professional photographers standard by which the many alternatives are judged and compared with.
It does over 90% of what I want to do (love those third party presets!).
Specialized software for HDR, focusing stacking, B&W conversion, several NIC products, Alien Skin, and Portrait Professional with an occasional dip into PS 2014 covers the remaining 10%.
