Thanks for stirring up a lot of memories. I still have a bottle of Rodinal from some 30 years ago (unopened). Don't know if it is still usable. At that time most often I used Microdol-X and PanF and Plus-X combination for the finest grain. Rodinal was not known for finest grain though, but it had some very unique properties.

From my Galapagos experience, you need a long tele zoom for birds, a 70-200mm, and a 24-70mm for urban street photography (like in Quito). For Galapagos alone, you don't need WA lens. If you only want to carry 2 lenses, I suggest tele zoom and a 24-105 zoom.

The new name OMSystem is also in the form of an official registered logo. The official Olympus name is gone. Also a new flagship model will be launched in 2022 - it will be top of the line (this is not rumour) with the new name. How much excitement and market share it will generate remains to be seen.

Reports said that the Olympus name will be dropped (or replaced) by OM System. This is obviously a decision by the new owner of the Olympus camera division. I hope the MFT format will stay although I don't own any Olympus gears. But the end of the name is here now.

Very nice B&W photos.
Not sure what a Canon Qtb is though.
I agree if you do your own B&W processing there is a possible savings if you own the equipment already or plan on doing large volumes with newly purchased equipment.
Color is more complex to DIY but can be done as well.
I believe someone once costed out a $3,000 digital system vs film costs which was an interesting way to see where actual savings occurred when in digital.
I use film sparingly so cost is absolutely not an issue, less than a good dinner out with my wife.
But again some very good shots and thank you for sharing.

Completely agree. Doing BW as an amateur or enthusiasticist, cost is not an issue. The fun is unlimited.

Thanks. This product web page did not mention uses for lenses and sensors etc. I guess the primary design uses are for keyboards and other small applications.

What are the potential problems using the canned air to clean sensor and lens surfaces? Sorry I miss it.

Like I mentioned, post-secondary students learning film photography are a better prospect, not high schools in general (because they might not have a photography program, even they have, mostly likely for digital only).

I big cities, universities and community colleges are still offering DR film courses. Many students are still looking for old film cameras and DR equipment. There is a market out there.

Not true, again from you..

Some real artists are still using film for the look it gives. And Universities are still teaching film classes.

I taught a 35mm B&W film course at a state university, and the students were enthusiastic to delve into a different media . It caused some of them learning pains with the development process and all, and having to wait to see their images. But the discovery process of printing in the darkroom was a revelation that many enjoyed, once they got the hang of it.

Yes I love my digital cameras and all their advantages, but don't go knocking film for everyone.

Not everyone needs instant gratification .

Not all painters use the same brushes and paints to create their art. There is still room in this world for diversity in creativity and mediums.

Cheers

Yes, universities here in Canada are still teaching film courses. Students are buying cheap film cameras and expensive film, learning and enjoying the whole processes. Yes, I am sure digital will be what they will do in their future careers, but at least they are exposed to film and may consider the learning as an asset.

Yet anoter this vs. that thread.

Film and digital are simply two different mediums in photography. From a practical point of view, there are advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons for both. Most of the issues are in actual production. Artistically speaking, either medium can be employed to create "art" provide the photographer is artistically talented and is so inclined.

There is a serious misconception that film/chemical/darkroom work requires more skill, craftsmanship and technical ability than digital imaging. That is patently untrue. Digital requires an equal but different set of technical skills and in many ways are less forgivng than film work. Digital imaging technology is more accurate and sensitive than film and results can suffer from more errors on the part of the photographers as well as more optical problems.

I would go so far as to say that many folks who dislike digital imaging, have not learned to use it as yet and do know how to maximize its potential.

As for film, I spent at least 1/3 of my life in the darkroom and colour labs in my studio. I do miss some of the tools, methods and craftsmanship involved in the process. Sadly, most of the emulsions, papers and materials as well as much of the chemistry are no longer available. I certainly do not miss the caustic chemicals and a high degree of maintenance and chemistry-control monitoring that is required to maintain quality and cleanliness in a professional lab.

Many of the folks who think they know to develop black and white film don't actually know how to do that in order to maximize image quality and produce crisp clean grain. There are methods whereby a 35mm negative can yield the same quality as medium or large format films. So if you are gonna do that, do it right. That's a good topic for another thread.

I agree with you. I am no professional, but I do miss all the darkroom work. I am still keeping all the DR essentials. One day when I set up a DR, say in a bathroom in the basement, I will be ready to have fun again. However, right now I spend all my time doing digital photography. This is just the reality or trend.

For anyone with a Western Digital HD, either internal or external, either spinning or SSD, WD has a neat utility called "WD Dashboard" which gives a ton of info about what's happening in the HD. I have an internal M.2 Western Digital SSD just for MS Flight Simulator, and here's a sample of what the Dashboard provides. In this example, the Status Button shows a constant temperature of 105° F, since it is not being used during the Dashboard run. It does get warmer when in use.

When I ran the Dashboard, I got this without any Temperature info. Why is that?
