Multiple cameras would be my solution. Why don’t you look in to renting another D500 for the duration of the trip.

The OP could also get a faster lens ... A modest investment in an EF 50 f/1.8 will likely help in the photography at the model contests at a modest $150, an image improvement for all EOS bodies from the lenses currently being used. A speedlight (external) flash will also likely help things at a more modest investment cost than a new high-megapixel body.

I don’t think that f/1.8 is going to help his DOF issues one iota...

How was I rude just stating a fact?

Please re-read my statement. I was apologizing because *I* sounded rude.

If you are under the (wrong) impression that the 28-300 is an FX lens, why would you not recommend it on the D8xx series cameras? Unless, of course, you are simply in “glass snob” mode?

My apologies, MT Shooter. On re-read, 1 — I was wrong on the lens format (mine is an 18-300), and 2 - that response sounds incredibly rude — I had intended a friendly jibe, but most certainly missed the mark.

My bad. I’ll shut up now. Though I would still be interested as to why MT Shooter doesn’t recommend it on the D8xx series cameras.

Why would an FX lens go into cropped mode on any camera? And why would you want it to? Your statement makes no sense at all.

The 28-300 is a DX lens. Put it on an FX camera like the D810 and the camera automatically goes into a DX crop mode.

Don't use it on the D800's or the D850 though.

Why not, other than it will go into cropped mode? It’s a great lens and I used it on my D810 multiple times prior to loaning it to my niece on the D3200.

You must have chanced upon a bad one. Mine (which is currently on loan to my niece) takes excellent pictures across the entire range.

Excellent photo. As many have already said, only one of her eyes is in tack-sharp focus. That being said, who cares — I would happily frame and display that photo!

I have been using Eneloops for years (AA & AAA). I have a bunch of the original Sanyo, as well as a bunch of the newer ones made by Panasonic. I use them in everything. Their biggest advantage over anything else is how much of a charge they will hold just sitting on the shelf — gone are the days of spending 24 hours charging batteries right before heading out the door — I charge them as they are changed out, and keep charged ones on the shelf. Performance is better than anything else I have used, though I did have some old Sunpacks that would last a little longer if I took them hot off the charger and ran them non-stop... The ONLY reason I keep a couple packs of Alkaline batteries in my bag is to give away when someone else comes up dry!

I have a set (mine are Vello — 12, 20 & 36mm also). I find that I use the 20mm a lot more than any other size/combination, and sometimes even the 12 is almost too much. It’s rare that I use the 36mm, though I have stacked them all up for the full 62mm on more than one occasion. The Savage, at $198.99, is more than twice the Vello set at $79.95, and significantly more than the Kenco at $123.95 (all prices current from BHPhoto.com). I can see where there would be a significant convenience factor if you stayed in the 55-71mm range, but personally I don’t think I would find myself using it that much. If I really needed more than 62mm, I would likely pop for another set of the Vello — being nothing more than an empty tube, there is no optical cost to using more... The Vello support auto-focus and exposure metering just fine.

I use a tilt head on my monopod. There is no need for pan capability, as you simply rotate the entire staff. Here they are:

The other thing I did was remove (after it disintegrated on its first hike) the rubber cap on the tip and replaced it with an end section from a Lekki tracking pole. This gave me a “real” tip I could actually hike with, complete with a carbide spike and a good rubber tip for indoor work. Lekki makes 2 sizes (besides carbon fiber), and the smaller diameter “lightweight” model was a perfect fit in the ID of the Manfrotto monopod.

Check your manual — I believe there is *ALSO* a setting that *turns off* the 1/2 shutter focus function. If you don’t do that, they will be constantly fighting...

Correct. However I doubt if jail time is in their future for bad advice.

Go to the bottom of pp 4 and top of page 5. Expressly NOT a deduction. One may deduct certain out-of-pocket expenses... but not for services rendered. For example, you can deduct the mileage to and from the location where you volunteered. Of course you should keep a log to attach as a statement to your tax return.

I had to fight the IRS once — over a $400 deduction they said was improper. Penalties and interest hit me with an INITIAL bill of $17,000 — it took a couple years of fighting to win — had I not won, the final bill would have been in the vicinity of $68,000 — might as well have been jail time at that point in my life. The ONLY reason actual jail time was not on the table was because I was able to PROVE there was no intent to defraud the government — otherwise there was 3 to 5 years on the table as well.

You want to laugh about tax fraud, go ahead. When they come knocking, be afraid...
